Steelers’ defense gets huge boost with key starter returning at perfect time

This won't fix all of Pittsburgh's defensive woes... but it helps.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled defensively worse than anyone could have imagined to begin the season. Despite the talent acquired during the offseason and the return of capable veterans, Mike Tomlin's defense has fallen well short of expectations. Fortunately, they could be in line for a boost in Week 4.

While poor execution is largely to blame for Pittsburgh's biggest defensive struggles early in the season, the Steelers have also been plagued by numerous injuries early in the year. Joey Porter Jr. suffered a hamstring injury late in the team's Week 1 contest against the New York Jets. Since then, DeShon Elliott sustained an MCL sprain, Alex Highsmith suffered a high ankle sprain, and Isaiahh Loudermilk landed in IR with an ankle injury.

Thankfully, it looks like some much-needed defensive help is coming at the perfect time.

Pittsburgh Steelers S DeShon Elliott is on track to play against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4

The Pittsburgh Steelers held their final practice on Friday across the pond as they prepare for their international game in Dublin, Ireland. After logging a limited practice all week, DeShon Elliott was a full participant on Friday—a clear indication that he will be ready to go this week.

The addition of Elliott means added help in the secondary... and Mike Tomlin will take help anywhere he can get it.

Entering Week 4, the Steelers rank 28th in yards allowed per game (386.0) and 27th in yards allowed per play (5.9). Pittsburgh also ranks 23rd in defensive EPA per play. On film, this team has been every bit as bad as the numbers would suggest (which isn't what we expected from the league's highest-paid defense).

While Elliott won't solve all of the team's problems on defense, it will give them a starting safety on the backend who can help contain Justin Jefferson this week. His presence on the field will also allow Jalen Ramsey more flexibility to move around the secondary and take more snaps at slot cornerback and perhaps outside corner, depending on whether Joey Porter Jr. suits up

Early in the season, both Ramsey and veteran cornerback Darius Slay have been beaten for huge touchdown receptions deep down the field. The two cornerbacks have an average age of nearly 33 years old—making them the oldest cornerback pairing in the league.

There are concerns surrounding the secondary regardless of Elliott's return, but he could give the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense a major boost this week.
