The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense needed to come into Week 2 with a stronger performance after a brutal showing in the season opener. So far, it’s been a mixed bag, and injuries at key spots aren’t helping matters.
For the second week, the Steelers' defensive line goes without first-round pick Derrick Harmon, leaving the front in the same position as last week, leaning on the depth provided by Isaiahh Loudermilk and rookie Yahya Black.
Unfortunately, that depth is already getting thinner as Loudermilk has left the game with an ankle injury.
Pittsburgh’s front will be forced to shoulder extra snaps
Loudermilk was out there first alongside Keeanu Benton and Cam Heyward on the defensive line, but left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. The severity of the injury is not yet known; however, Loudermilk was initially designated as questionable to return before quickly being downgraded to out.
While Loudermilk isn’t a huge presence on the defense, he’s at least a reliable veteran. Without him, the Steelers' depth is going to be tested against the Seattle Seahawks.
So far, the defense has managed the rushing attack from Seattle better than it did against the New York Jets. As of writing, Seattle is averaging less than three yards per carry. Still, the game is in its early stages, and without Loudermilk, the Steelers have fewer resources to rotate the defensive front to keep everyone fresh.

Regardless of how the game unfolds, the defensive line will have to contend with the extra snaps. Whether the Seahawks are positioned to burn clock or to stage a comeback through the air, the defensive line’s collective stamina will no doubt be tested in the fourth quarter.
After the latest injury update from the sideline, Loudermilk has been ruled out for the game. The Steelers' thin DL depth just got thinner.
