This isn't the news anyone wanted to wake up to on Saturday morning. The Pittsburgh Steelers held their annual Friday Night Lights practice in Latrobe for the biggest on-field event at Steelers training camp. Unfortunately, former 2023 seventh-round pick Cory Trice Jr. has gone down with another injury, and fans are growing tired of hearing the same old story year after year.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that Trice had suffered a hamstring injury, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reported. As of now, there's no timetable for a potential return.
This ailment comes after a 2023 season that was plagued by injuries. Ironically, Trice went down with a hamstring injury in Week 3 last season against the LA Chargers. He would miss the following 11 games with the injury before finally making his way back onto the field in Week 15 against the Baltimore Ravens.
What's depressing is that Trice was looking fantastic before going down with the injury last season. Against the Denver Broncos in Week 2, Trice had a fantastic showing that included a game-saving interception in the end zone in the second half.
Before this, Trice missed his entire rookie season in 2023 after he suffered an ACL tear early in training camp. Now our suspicions are confirmed: Cory Trice is made of glass, and the Steelers don't know what to do with him anymore.
Promising CB Cory Trice Jr. may never become more than a dream for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Cory Trice had the total package coming out of Purdue in the 2023 NFL Draft. At 6'3'' and 206 pounds with 32 3/8'' arms, Trice moved like a much smaller cornerback—showcasing outstanding hip fluidity and impressive ball skills on film.
However, it was a laundry list of soft tissue and ligament injuries that dropped him from being a second or third-round draft pick all the way down to the seventh round in 2023. Now we can understand why.
Despite his continued promise, we can expect Trice to get injured at this point. There's a saying in football that 'hurt guys tend to stay hurt.' This couldn't be truer when it comes to Trice.
We hope that Trice's hamstring injury isn't anywhere near as serious as the one we saw last year, which forced him to miss more than half the season. But the talented cornerback is running out of chances, and he needs to stay on the field. Omar Khan made this clear ahead of the 2025 offseason.
"We really like Cory [Trice]," Khan said at the 2025 NFL Combine, per Nick Farabaugh of PennLive. "The reality is that durability has been an issue, and until durability is not an issue, you know, that's a position that we, you know, we have to keep our eye on."
At some point, Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan, and the Pittsburgh Steelers won't be able to tolerate the perpetually injured cornerback, and Trice has already proven that he can't be counted on to stay on the field. The sad reality is that Cory Trice is made of glass... and it's a shame.
