Keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster isn't impossible to accomplish, but it remains unlikely. Both Mike McCarthy and Omar Khan voiced that they are open to keeping that many quarterbacks, but in reality, it doesn't make sense. With only 53 players able to make the team out of training camp, it forces the Pittsburgh Steelers to decide between keeping Will Howard or Mason Rudolph.
You know what you are getting from Rudolph if he sticks past final cuts. A known veteran who has started a good chunk of games with varying results. He can help keep you competitive if Aaron Rodgers misses some action this season. Just because Rudolph is a known backup in the league doesn't mean keeping him over Will Howard is the best decision for the team in the long term.
At the end of the day, Howard is a former sixth-round pick who hasn't played a down of regular or preseason action to date.
The young quarterback has to beat out Rudolph at training camp if he wants to make this team, but that hope is starting to fade. Most of Steelers Nation wants to keep a younger quarterback around, but the current standing of the team directs the team to hang on to Rudolph.

There is a current divide among Pittsburgh fans, as some prefer Howard, while others want to see what Drew Allar has to offer. The truth is neither will probably end up as the franchise quarterback to replace Aaron Rodgers when it is all said and done. One is a late-round guy, and the other is a lottery ticket who could be a boom-or-bust prospect.
No matter how you feel about Howard or Allar, it's clear how the Steelers will situate their roster if they keep four quarterbacks.
Both Aaron Rodgers and Allar are locks to make this team, except if one of them suffers a season-ending injury. That means unless they hold onto four at the position, Howard and Rudolph will have to show during the remainder of training camp and the preseason that they deserve the final spot. It seems like more of an uphill climb for Howard than it does for his veteran counterpart.
Thus far in training camp, Howard hasn't been at the level of competition you'd prefer to see. He has shown some positives, but he has also made mental errors that have resulted in turnovers. If he wants to win the backup job, Howard must refrain from forcing throws and play a clean game. The backup to Rodgers must perform at a safe level and avoid taking unreasonable risks.
When it comes to Rudolph, he just needs to stick to his game, and that might be enough to force Howard into the final roster cuts.
It would be a shame to see Howard leave the Steelers, but that is the current path we are heading down unless they hang on to four quarterbacks. Fans would certainly go berserk, but Will Howard must show more if he wants to keep his job in Pittsburgh.
