The Pittsburgh Steelers are doing more than just showing signs of life; their offense has put together a stronger three-game stretch than we've seen in years. Unfortunately, they are short-staffed at the wide receiver position, and even when Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson were healthy, this unit underwhelmed.
That's where the Los Angeles Chargers come into play.
Sitting on a 0-5 record entering Week 6 with virtually no chance to fight back in the playoff race this year, the Chargers could be on the verge of cleaning house before the NFL trade deadline on November 10... and the perfect Steelers trade target has never been easier to spot: wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
McConkey has had an unusually slow start to his third NFL season in 2026 after dealing with nagging injuries. However, if the Chargers are considering moving on from Jim Harbaugh (as they should be), they could be entering full rebuild mode, and trading McConkey might not be out of the question.
This could be just what the doctor ordered for the Steelers.
Ladd McConkey would bring the perfect type of wide receiver skill set the Pittsburgh Steelers lack
The Steelers' receiving room has no shortage of issues. In addition to three of their top four players experiencing some drop issues early in the season, this group—as a whole—lacks elite route-running chops and the ability to create separation on their breaks.
And Ladd McConkey could fix that.
With excellent agility and snap-movement skills out of his breaks, McConkey could operate as a slot option or an outside receiver in Pittsburgh's offense. Right now, head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't have a stable option in the passing game that he can trust on a down-to-down basis.
While we have aspirations that Germie Bernard will be a go-to target, the Steelers can't put all of their eggs in that basket, and they still need additional help at wide receiver—even if Bernard proves to be excellent.
McConkey's biggest issue is availability. The lightweight receiver often gets shaken up when going over the middle of the field, and he's been forced to exit the game too often early in his career. But when it comes to talent, he's got everything McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers want.
This was on full display during his rookie season in 2024. During his first NFL season, the Chargers' second-round pick exploded for 82 catches, 1,149 yards, and seven touchdowns. These numbers actually top George Pickens' best numbers in these categories in his first three seasons with Pittsburgh.
McConkey isn't a stranger to being the top option in the passing game, but his inability to stay healthy and the lack of talent on the Chargers' roster have caused his production to plummet.
McConkey will have one year remaining on his contract in 2027, in addition to what's left of the third year of his rookie deal in 2026. This means that the Steelers wouldn't have to pay him right away. Unfortunately, they would still be looking at surrendering respectable draft capital.
To pull off a McConkey trade with the Chargers, the Steelers would likely have to give up at least a second-round pick (and possibly a first-rounder). We just saw what Marvin Harrison Jr. went for in the Texans trade, and McConkey has been better and more productive.
Perhaps the Steelers could offer a package of a second-round pick, a mid-round pick, and even throw in 2024 draftmate Roman Wilson to sweeten the deal (who is on a similar contract). But realistically, it might be something like a first-round pick, and the Steelers maybe get a fourth-rounder back along with McConkey.
If Ladd can stay healthy, the cost would be worth the potential reward.
At the end of the day, this would be a small price to pay for a team desperate to win football games now and find an upgrade in their wide receiver room. Ladd McConkey isn't a 'Tier 1' receiver at this stage of his career, but his skill set would complement DK Metcalf's perfectly and would give the Steelers a true go-to option in the passing game.
