The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Pittsburgh Steelers may have a whole new coaching staff in place following Mike Tomlin's departure, but their goals remain the same. They want to compete again in 2026, and the hiring of Mike McCarthy as their next head coach proves that they are focused on the here and now, not the future.
That means general manager Omar Khan has a lot of work to do between now and the start of next season, and it starts with free agency in a few weeks. Pittsburgh has dipped into free agency more often over the last few years, and they will need to do so again if they want to make a run. One of their biggest needs is at the wide receiver spot, and there is a perfect target for Khan to focus on.
Romeo Doubs has been a consistent contributor for the Green Bay Packers ever since being drafted in the fourth round back in 2022, racking up nearly 2,800 yards and 23 touchdowns. He may not have overlapped with McCarthy during his time with Green Bay, but he fits what the Steelers offense needs next to DK Metcalf.
Romeo Doubs could be the perfect complement to DK Metcalf for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Doubs won't ever be mistaken for a superstar, but that makes him affordable for teams that need a player with his skill set. Pro Football Focus projects that he will sign a three-year, $45 million deal, less than half of what Pittsburgh is paying Metcalf per season.
While spending even that much on another receiver may not be what fans prefer, adding a veteran to the room and also spending a high draft pick on the position feels like the best way to strengthen the offense.

Doubs would give Pittsburgh some of the toughness and contested catch ability they lacked last season, and would allow them to better utilize Metcalf as a field stretcher and yards after catch threat. He hasn't played much in the slot throughout his career, but he has the traits to play there more often if needed. With McCarthy preferring to use three wide receivers, having options to play in the slot will be more important than ever.
There is also his (brief) time spent with Aaron Rodgers, who seems likely to return as the starting quarterback in 2026. While I personally wouldn't want to make any decisions based on Rodgers' return, it would make sense to pair him with a player with whom he at least has some history.
Overall, Doubs might be one of the few free agent receivers with the right combination of asking price and skill set for the Steelers to pursue. It's up to Khan and the rest of the front office to decide if they are willing to spend the money to bring him in.
