Steelers were just hit with a Mike McCarthy dilemma fans weren't thinking about

After nine straight seasons without a single playoff win, Pittsburgh Steelers fans knew that it was time for Mike Tomlin to go. But the transition from Tomlin to veteran head coach Mike McCarthy won't be all sunshine and rainbows.

McCarthy has produced some excellent offenses, most recently as the HC of the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, Steelers fans were just hit with a dilemma they hadn't considered: McCarthy trying to balance managing an older set-in-their-ways roster while implementing his game plan.

On Monday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated brought up this issue in his takeaways of where every team stands entering the summer. Breer explained why balancing a roster with aging veterans and former superstars might be harder than it appears.

"There’s a real balance that homecoming Steelers coach Mike McCarthy will have to strike between managing an older roster and establishing his program—generally, Year 1 isn’t when you take the foot off the gas.

The good news is McCarthy has always been willing to change and adapt to the conditions around him, and he’s had veteran teams in the past, which tells me he’ll have a good game plan for having Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey, Cam Heyward and the rest of the franchise’s elder statesmen both rested and ready for Week 1. Making sure that doesn’t affect the rest of the team will be the tricky part."

Appeasing established veterans on the roster is an issue that doesn't get talked about enough in the NFL. When things are going well, you don't hear bout it. But when things are going poorly, it can derail the team's chemistry or chances of competing.

The names Breer mentioned—Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey, and Cam Heyward—were all perennial All-Pros with Hall of Fame-level resumes. They're used to coaches catering to their abilities.

However, as these veterans age out of their prime, they need to be willing to buy into McCarthy's formula for success. Humbling themselves and potentially assuming a smaller role in the operation won't come easily.

McCarthy was hired to replace Tomlin for a reason—team president Art Rooney II and Omar Khan felt he's the man who can take their team to the next level and finally become a competitive team in the postseason. But this won't happen unless McCarthy can find the right balance between leaning on his veterans and establishing his program.

Unfortunately, being an NFL head coach isn't as easy as assembling a 53-man roster or showing up at the stadium on gamedays. If calling the offensive plays wasn't enough responsibility for McCarthy, the Steelers' new head coach will have to find the harmony between appeasing his high-profile players and unleashing his playbook to the fullest extent without upsetting the apple cart.

McCarthy is a veteran leader who has dealt with drama from stars before (like Rodgers). He should be up for a new challenge with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2026.
