Most are paying close attention to how the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 season concludes before they render a final judgment. Their fans are tired of being mediocre and barely scraping by instead of finding ways to compete in the playoffs. If the team fails to make noise in the postseason this time around, it could lead to monumental changes, and that could start with several cap casualties.

The Steelers are scheduled to have $39.86 million in cap space, according to overthecap.com. That is a solid figure to work with, but the team could raise it by moving on from contracts that have not met expectations.

A handful of notable players could be shown the door as cap casualties, and Pittsburgh could witness them off the squad after the New Year arrives in the NFL world.

Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers who should be looking over their shoulder after the season

Calvin Anderson, OT

Let's get an easy one out of the way, as Calvin Anderson failed as their swing tackle. He struggled during his limited playing time before he suffered a devastating injury. Both Dylan Cook and Andrus Peat have demonstrated that they are better options and come at a lower cost. Making Anderson a cap casualty would create $2 million in available spending.

It's a significant savings from a failed depth tackle.

Cam Heyward, DT

Here is where things could get interesting if Cam Heyward wants to continue to play in 2026. He is aging, and although his overall performance has been strong, his sack numbers have declined significantly. Cutting Heyward would be a risk, but it would save the Steelers $14.25 million in cap space. Replacing the legendary figure would be difficult, but they could use that money elsewhere.

Jonnu Smith, TE

He's only been in Pittsburgh for this season, but it's mostly been a disaster for Jonnu Smith.

He was a Pro Bowler last year, and things have taken a drastic turn for the worse. His inclusion in the Jalen Ramsey deal seemed positive, but there was always a sense of puzzlement regarding his role. The Steelers have yet to establish a defined spot for the tight end, and releasing him would save $7 million.

Malik Harrison, LB

He isn't a star player on Pittsburgh's defense, but Malik Harrison hasn't lived up to his billing. He is a tough run stuffer, but he hasn't replaced Elandon Roberts adequately. If he becomes a cap casualty in 2026, it would save the Steelers $4.75 million. That's a significant number for a role-playing linebacker. It was worth a shot at getting younger, but this experiment has run its course.
