Howard may not be the lock everyone thinks he is.

A lot has been said about the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation. From who is the presumed future to if the team needed to invest in Brandon Sorsby (if they had the chance), it feels like this group is one big mystery.

One thing that is clear, however, is that Steelers fans are enamored with Will Howard.

Since being a sixth-round pick last year, fans have been quick to tab him as the future of this team. Even after Drew Allar was taken in the third round of this year's draft, there is a large contingent of fans convinced that Howard will be the guy.

Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, on the other hand, seems less convinced. So much so that he left him off his recent roster prediction.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have no definite reason to keep Will Howard

I like Howard as much as the next guy, but calling a former sixth-round pick a roster lock has always been a stretch. There is some stiff quarterback competition this year.

Allar is a lock to make the team given his draft status, as is Aaron Rodgers for obvious reasons. That means either Howard or Mason Rudolph will be the backup.

While almost everyone has Howard penciled into that role, this team may not be comfortable with him being given that much responsibility. Despite lacking in a lot of areas, this team feels like it can win now.

You want a backup that can get you by for a few games. You know Rudolph can do that. We don’t know if Howard can yet.

Kaboly leaving him off his roster prediction is contrarian to most, but it makes sense. If Howard can’t prove his value, he could easily miss out on the roster.

This leads to fans naturally crying out that he won’t make it to the practice squad or that the team should trade him instead of cutting him. The fact of the matter is, Howard has yet to play a snap in the NFL. He essentially has no value until he proves it.

Leaving Howard off his roster prediction was contrary to popular belief, but it makes sense. Howard is far from a lock to make this team. He is being given every opportunity to win the job, but there is a very real chance that he is off the roster entirely by the time the regular season starts.
