It is not often that Pittsburgh Steelers fans get excited about news involving the addition of a punter. However, Alan Saunders of Pittsburgh Steelers Now reported that the team has invited former Penn State punter Gabriel Nwosu to its rookie minicamp. This invitation could be the first step for the rookie specialist to get his foot in the door and compete with Cameron Johnston.

While the punter position rarely generates much excitement, it is easy to understand the interest in this situation.

Nwosu is a massive presence. NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler, in his 2026 draft guide titled 'The Beast', lists the behemoth punter at 6'6'' and 313 pounds, with a massive 83-inch wingspan. His size makes him something of an outlier at the position. Additionally, his time at Penn State could work in his favor as he looks to compete with Cameron Johnston in a potential punting battle moving forward.

Receiving an invitation to the rookie minicamp is an important first step, but earning a contract with the Steelers will be a much greater challenge.

A strong performance during minicamp could give Nwosu a legitimate chance to remain with the team as it heads into training camp. He has already shown solid ability at the position, and that could eventually earn him an opportunity to compete directly with Johnston.

The Pittsburgh Steelers addition of Gabe Nwosu could put Cameron Johnston's job in jeopardy

Unless the Steelers’ coaching staff adopts a different approach than what has been typical under Mike Tomlin, the team should carry two punters into training camp. Cameron Johnston has delivered several strong seasons during his career, but multiple injury-plagued campaigns in recent years suggest Pittsburgh should be cautious about placing too much faith in the veteran moving forward.

Nwosu is accustomed to cold weather conditions after spending significant time booming punts at Penn State.

He has experience playing in rain, snow, and bitter cold throughout his college career. He only served as the Nittany Lions’ primary punter during this past season; that limited starting experience pushed him into undrafted free agency. Still, he could be a player who works his way onto the roster with a strong showing.

The Penn State product averaged 46 yards per punt across 13 games this past season. While he punted just 38 times, he also served as the team’s primary kickoff specialist during his college career. That added versatility is a valuable wrinkle on his résumé and could prove useful if Chris Boswell were ever to be sidelined by injury.

With his skill set, Nwosu could potentially emerge as a legitimate challenger to Johnston for the punter job.
