The Pittsburgh Steelers-Joey Porter Jr. saga has continued to be one of the most discussed storylines in the NFL this season, and it doesn't appear that will be changing anytime soon. After being listed as a full participant during walkthroughs on Monday and Tuesday, Porter's back injury supposedly flared up yet again, and he is now out for Week 4's game against the Cleveland Browns.
It's clear as day at this point that Porter's absence has nothing to do with his back and everything to do with his lack of a new contract. Trade rumors continue to swirl for a reason, and it seems more and more likely that the final resolution to this situation will be the Steelers moving on from their star corner.
Regardless of which side you find yourself on in this whole thing, the only way I can describe it is disappointing. After years of struggling to draft and develop players at CB, moving on from a player of Porter's caliber would be a hard pill for fans to swallow. Unfortunately, that's exactly where this is headed.

Even if the Steelers don't trade Porter before this year's trade deadline, it's possible that he has already played his last snap for the team. Unless they are willing to clear him medically to play by essentially calling him a liar in reference to his back injury, Porter can continue to have "flare-ups" every week that keep him from playing.
With him still being on the active roster and practicing in a limited fashion, he can wait out the Steelers and become a free agent after the season, forcing them to either offer him a new deal or franchise tag him. A tag and trade could be a viable route for Pittsburgh to take in that scenario, but his trade value will only decrease the farther removed he is from having played.
The best thing for both sides at this point (especially from an upside perspective) would be for Porter to return in Week 5 and prove he is the caliber of player that he was in 2025. That would help the Steelers go on one final run with Aaron Rodgers while helping Porter set himself up for a lucrative new deal in 2027, whether it's with the Steelers or elsewhere.
Based on how Porter and his agency have handled things so far, that scenario seems like a pipe dream. Omar Khan and the Steelers' front office are far from blameless in this situation, but until we find out the full details of how contract negotiations unfolded, it's tough to know exactly how badly both sides handled things.
