The Pittsburgh Steelers are back at it again. After visiting with veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis in the spring, Davis is flying back to the facility to meet with Pittsburgh's brass, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports.
Davis is coming off an underwhelming season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, in which he recorded just 20 receptions on 42 targets over 10 games while averaging a dismal 5.7 yards per target. The veteran dealt with injuries last season, and Davis failed a physical for several interested teams this offseason.
The interest in Davis is a poor sign for the Steelers' wide receiver room. While DK Metcalf will be Aaron Rodgers' go-to option in the passing game, there are doubts outside of him.
Calvin Austin III was primed for a big opportunity as the team's No. 2 wide receiver, but a soft tissue injury has kept him out of action the past few weeks. In his absence, second-year player and third-round pick Roman Wilson has put his skills on display, but not enough to sway the Steelers from adding another player to the wide receiver room.
A second visit for Gabe Davis means the Steelers are seriously interested in beefing up their wide receiver room, and one veteran could be the odd man out.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could sign Gabe Davis to add security to the shaky WR room
Gabe Davis was just one season into a three-year, $39 million contract from the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency before his team gave up on him. Between the injuries, a 40.5 percent success rate last season, and the emergence of Brian Thomas Jr., Davis became expendable.
To get anything out of Davis, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to hope that he looks more like the player who killed them down the field when he was on the Buffalo Bills during his first four seasons. But the fact that Pittsburgh is interested in Davis could be a bad sign for the status of Calvin Austin III.
Austin hasn't been able to see the field for preseason action, and it's unclear when he will return. Likewise, depth WR and special teams gunner Ben Skowronek is banged up.

Even if Austin and Skowronek are healthy by the start of the season, the Steelers could simply be looking for an upgrade. The 33-year-old Robert Woods has been unspectacular all summer, and Davis could jump in to take his spot on the roster.
The visit with Davis comes at an interesting time, as Roman Wilson is coming off back-to-back impressive preseason performances. Wilson has been excellent over the past few weeks and had a strong finish to training camp. The 2024 third-round pick may have a shot to emerge as the team's WR2, but signing Davis could put a damper on that.
It's unclear how much Davis' 2024 injuries are still affecting him, but the Steelers are obviously interested in improving their wide receiver room. We'll see if anything gets done this time around.
