The Pittsburgh Steelers could use help at the wide receiver spot, but that doesn't mean that everyone is a fit for them at the position. For instance, Allen Lazard of the New York Jets, who has been floated as a potential fit for the Steelers ahead of the deadline, is not someone this team needs to entertain bringing in.
Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone recently linked Lazard to the Steelers while discussing possible trade candidates. To Bedinger's credit, there is a strong relationship between Lazard and Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That does need to be stated here.
The only reason Pittsburgh would be making this trade, however, is because of Rodgers' relationship with Lazard. There's no other reason this team should be interested in adding the Jets' wideout. Bedinger even pointed out how Lazard has done very little with the Jets this season and didn't even travel with the team to London for Week 6.
"The Jets left Allen Lazard home for personal reasons as they travel to London in Week 6 to take on the Denver Broncos, bringing even more clarity to the fact that his playing future is not likely in New York.
The decision by the Jets to sign Lazard has been a brutal pairing from the start, and it's clear that he was just brought in to appease Aaron Rodgers. With Rodgers long gone, it seems like it's only a matter of time before the new regime in New York also moves on, and it won't cost that much to get him off their hands."
Under no circumstances should the Pittsburgh Steelers reunite Aaron Rodgers with Allen Lazard
Yes, Rodgers is the quarterback of the Steelers, and he's done well with Lazard in the past. That's why the Jets brought Lazard in after trading for Rodgers and, well, look how that turned out. The Jets are still stuck with him, and he's not even playing in games for them anymore. Why would the Steelers want to trade for a player who isn't even getting playing time?
The Steelers could use help at wide receiver, sure, but Allen Lazard isn't the answer. If they're only doing it to make Rodgers, who's signed for just this year, happy, then it's not worth pursuing. In the meantime, he has D.K. Metcalf, and hopefully the team will bring in an actual receiving threat for him to throw to that will keep Rodgers happy and the offense humming.
