Aaron Rodgers isn’t playing for a contract extension (he plans to retire after the 2026 season). But it’s clear he intends to leave a lasting impression with the Pittsburgh Steelers. A 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts was more than a statement; it was also another heat check for the aging veteran.
The results are forcing fans to wonder if Mike McCarthy’s offense is finally clicking.
Well, it seems so. Rodgers completed three touchdown passes for a third consecutive game. The achievement is celebrated in a town unaccustomed to offensive explosions. He became the first Steelers quarterback to throw three touchdowns in three consecutive weeks within the same season.
The 42-year-old gunslinger is keeping fans on their toes. On Sunday, the Steelers outlasted Jonathan Taylor’s slow-burning rushing attack. It forced Rodgers to complete 22 of 31 attempts. His effort resulted in 235 passing yards without an interception.
That’s exactly what the doctor ordered.
Rodgers looked fluid against a secondary praying for missteps. Indianapolis’ secondary was a known weak spot of Lou Anarumo’s defense. They entered Week 5 ranked 29th in passing yards allowed per game (261.3). It was the perfect storm for a quarterback searching to have a productive afternoon.
Pittsburgh’s leader used his footwork to extend plays and move the chains. When the pressure became overwhelming, Jaylen Warren became a reliable comfort blanket. He finished the afternoon with six receptions for 87 receiving yards and a touchdown reception. Pat Freiermuth was also heavily involved. He earned two touchdown receptions on the afternoon.
Pittsburgh Steelers must do everything to keep Aaron Rodgers’ hot streak alive
It was a polished effort from a quarterback getting better with time. But how long can fans expect Rodgers' heat check to last?
Hopefully for a while. Yes, the Colts’ secondary wasn’t the crème de la crème, but it shouldn’t negate the results. Rodgers still connected with six different pass-catches without Michael Pittman Jr. in the rotation. His left foot injury placed him on the injured reserve. It's also worth noting that wide receivers Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek left the game early with injuries.
Pittman and Wilson will miss time, but the Steelers have role players willing to step up. Germie Bernard tied Warren in receptions (6) and earned at least 80 receiving yards each. Watching Bernard contribute in key moments was pleasing to the eye.
There’s more football to play. And stacking wins could help Pittsburgh gain pivotal traction in the AFC North before a Week 9 bye week. McCarthy’s unit will travel to Tampa Bay before then. Currently, Todd Bowles’ secondary allows 234.6 passing yards per game.
Then they’ll face off against the Saints in Paris.
A multi-touchdown performance from Aaron Rodgers doesn’t guarantee a Pittsburgh Steelers win. It takes a complete effort to earn victories on Sundays. Mike McCarthy’s team is 2-1 during Rodgers’ three-touchdown streak. His arm isn't the final word, but it can affect the outcome.
