Steelers must keep Week 4 UFL playmakers in mind during NFL draft

If they fail to address a need in the draft, the UFL could be a nice fallback option.

The NFL's best teams consistently add some of their top talent during the NFL draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers only have six selections in the event, which could mean different vacancies remain. If the Steelers fail to add some prospects to key roster spots, Pittsburgh could turn towards the United Football League to add to the depth chart. It could be their final option to turn to.

The UFL just wrapped up Week 4 of competition. It hasn't been a clean brand of football thus far, but it continues to be a good resource for NFL teams. Those in the UFL won't become NFL stars, but they could be quality assets at training camp. The Steelers have turned their attention to spring football for help in the past.

That could always help again if they fail at different positions in the draft.

Week 4 UFL standouts who could calm Pittsburgh Steelers draft worries

Bryce Perkins, QB, Michigan Panthers

The Michigan Panthers have been on a hot streak to open their season. They stomped the Memphis Showboats on their way to a 27-9 victory this past weekend. Bryce Perkins remains in the hunt as the UFL MVP. He has become a shining star in a rather bleak darkness.

Perkins produced a stat sheet of 200 passing yards with two touchdowns in the air and compiled 45 yards on the ground.

No one should expect Perkins to jump into the NFL and produce impressive numbers like he is this spring. Steelers general manager Omar Khan wants four quarterbacks on the roster, and if they can't sign Aaron Rodgers or draft a quarterback, the UFL has serviceable players. Perkins shouldn't be in the starter conversation, but he could push someone for a roster spot at training camp.

Ajene Harris, CB, Arlington Renegades

After some bumps, the Arlington Renegades are back on track this season. They went up against the St. Louis Battlehawks, who are starting to struggle with injuries during the early portion of their campaign. Arlington might have let the Battlehawks stick around in this contest, but they sealed the deal after Ajene Harris took an interception back for a pick-six to finish it.

Harris is a short cornerback who remains one of the best defensive players for the Renegades. The veteran has been in the UFL and other spring leagues since 2020 with hopes of returning to the NFL. The Steelers could use some competition at the cornerback position, and Harris should've caught their eye after he made a monumental play to lead Arlington to victory.

Jordan Ta'amu, QB, D.C. Defenders

Perkins should be the Steelers' top target going into the draft if they cannot land a quarterback during the draft, but other United Football League signal callers should also be on a shortlist. Jordan Ta'amu is a veteran player in the spring and has provided competition for NFL training camps in recent years. His performance in Week 4 was close to perfect.

Ta'amu produced 299 passing yards with one touchdown through the air. He added 74 rushing yards and another touchdown using his legs. This UFL veteran has been inconsistent this season but is coming off his best performance. Not only was it a terrific effort by Ta'amu, but that might've been one of the best quarterback performances the UFL has seen.
