Steelers must target Kyle Louis after shocking NFL comparison emerges

The Steelers must make this easy selection in April.

The odds of finding a gem in the NFL Draft are slim — maybe even slimmer than most fans realize. But if there’s one front office that thrives on doing just that, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers. General manager Omar Khan and his staff have built a reputation for working the board with patience and precision, always keeping an eye out for that one player who can quietly become a franchise cornerstone.

This year, that player might just be right in their own backyard.

NFL analyst Louis Riddick didn’t mince words when sharing his opinion of Pittsburgh linebacker Kyle Louis, saying on X, “Going to keep saying it… in a world where everyone wants a ‘comp,’ this young man is gonna be like the great LB Derrick Brooks.”

That’s not a throwaway comment. Coming from Riddick — one of the most respected evaluators in football media — it’s a statement that demands attention.

And honestly, I couldn’t agree more.

Louis, the former First Team All-American in 2024, embodies so much of what made Derrick Brooks special: instincts, range, and an unrelenting motor. At Pitt, Louis was the heartbeat of the defense — a player whose presence couldn’t be ignored.

Over the past two seasons, he’s racked up 24 tackles for loss, six interceptions, and 10 sacks — absurd production for an off-ball linebacker. He doesn’t just show up on the stat sheet; he dominates game flow.

The Pittsburgh Steelers cannot ignore Kyle Louis' ceiling during the 2026 NFL Draft

At the NFL Scouting Combine and his pro day, Louis backed up everything the tape had already shown. A 4.53-second 40-yard dash, an explosive 39.5-inch vertical jump, and a broad jump just shy of 11 feet — outrageous numbers for a linebacker who’s close to 225 pounds. His closing speed leaps off the screen, and his short-area burst allows him to erase yards before ball carriers even realize he’s coming.

Pittsburgh has been aching for that kind of presence in the middle of its defense again. Under former coordinator Teryl Austin, that signature “Steel Curtain” aggression dulled. With Patrick Graham now leading the defense, this is a chance to rekindle that identity — and Kyle Louis feels like the kind of player who can restore it.

Of course, there’s the question of value.

Using the 21st overall pick on Louis might feel premature given Pittsburgh’s various roster holes — wide receiver depth and secondary help remain pressing needs. But if Khan can hold his nerve and Louis is still available when those third-round selections roll around, that’s where the heist could happen.

Imagine walking away from Day 2 of the draft with a hometown linebacker who plays like a decade-long starter. That’s not just a draft win — that’s the type of move that reshapes a team’s foundation.

The Steelers’ stars are aligned here. Kyle Louis isn’t just another draft prospect — he’s the rare blend of production, character, and upside that echoes players of the franchise’s storied past. If the comparisons to Derrick Brooks even come halfway true, Pittsburgh could walk away with one of the draft’s biggest steals.

Now, it’s up to the Steelers to make it happen.
