Steelers must think twice before risky move for new trade target

Just because he's a big name doesn't mean he should cost much.

Any positive momentum the New York Giants built during the offseason appears to have abruptly stalled. Star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has formally requested a trade, a development that immediately shifts the team’s outlook. While the Pittsburgh Steelers are actively planning for a future without Cam Heyward, Lawrence may not be the ideal solution.

Despite his availability, the Giants are expected to demand a significant return, making a deal difficult to justify.

The Giants have remained active this offseason following the hiring of John Harbaugh as their new head coach. He has brought several familiar faces with him from his time with the Baltimore Ravens, helping to accelerate the team’s transition. Overall, the moves have been well-received and have injected optimism into New York’s outlook. However, this recent situation has introduced uncertainty.

There are understandable reasons why Pittsburgh could show interest in this potential trade target. While the Steelers may explore the possibility, a deal does not currently make sense. Lawrence is still only 28 years old, but his production has not matched his earlier peak in recent seasons. Unless the Giants are willing to move him at a discounted price, a blockbuster trade is unlikely to materialize.

Pittsburgh Steelers should'nt rush into a decision after Dexter Lawrence hits trade block

After signing Heyward to an extension earlier this offseason, the franchise has little need to add another star defensive player. Pittsburgh also selected Derrick Harmon in the first round of last year’s draft, and the team could choose to address defensive tackle again during the upcoming draft in April.

With 12 total picks at their disposal, the Steelers have flexibility and could use one, or potentially more, to pursue a star player in a trade if the right opportunity presents itself.

New York is expected to seek a first-round pick or more for Lawrence, an asking price the Steelers should be unwilling to meet. That said, there is a potential connection worth noting. New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham held the same role during some of Lawrence’s early years in New York, which could factor into Pittsburgh’s level of interest, even if a deal remains unlikely.

One of the most intriguing elements of any potential trade involving Lawrence is his contract situation. He carries a cap hit of just $18.5 million in each of the next two seasons, which is excellent value for a player of his caliber. That level of cost control would undoubtedly appeal to the Steelers.

However, everything ultimately hinges on the trade compensation required and the looming contract extension Lawrence is reportedly seeking.

Lawrence has now landed on the trade block after pushing his situation with the Giants to that point. He has been seeking a new contract from the organization for several years, but questions remain about whether he warrants one. While he is a former All-Pro, his recent performance has fallen short of that standard. He is an enticing option, but the Steelers should be careful in potential negotiations.
