Steelers need one thing from Chris Boswell after massive new contract

The Steelers front office must believe this X-Factor will have a better season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are doing everything in their power to have a successful season. That included offering kicker Chris Boswell a four-year, $ 28 million contract extension earlier this week. The All-Pro special teams captain has earned his stripes during his tenure with the franchise. He’s become a household name and a reliable player. I also believe he’s instrumental in Mike McCarthy's unit’s success.

But honestly, we need Boswell to raise the standards that have fallen throughout the last few seasons. His recent performances may raise eyebrows among fans after a generous contract extension.

In the fell clutch of circumstance, kickers cannot waiver. Throughout an impressive career, Boswell has answered the call. When the Steelers' offense failed to score, Boswell cleaned up the mess. His reliability, accuracy, and clutch gene made him an X-Factor. It’s also helped the kicker earn a prominent role on the roster.

At the end of the 2023 season, Boswell finished with a 93.5% field goal percentage.  His three-point chip shots kept the Steelers in the game long enough to survive. The timely and consistent points ultimately became a safety raft.

But it could not support the weight of mediocrity much longer. Eventually, things began to fall apart.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need Chris Boswell to have a bounce back season

It’s hard to view Pittsburgh’s closer the same after witnessing a steep decline. Sure, at times his services felt overused. Stalled drives became frequent, forcing the special team veteran to create magic in moments of desperation. His field goals were no longer automatic. Fatigue became a factor, and Boswell’s performance took a blow.

In 2025, Boswell’s field goal percentage fell to 92.2%. The decline was small but noticeable. He made 13 of 15 field goals from 50 yards or more, doubling the attempts from the previous campaign.

The biggest performance dip transpired recently. Last season, Boswell earned a 84.4% field goal made percentage. He missed two field goals from 50 yards or more (9-11) and two field goals between 30 and 39 yards (2-4).

Boswell’s recent mistakes were unexpected. He’s an All-Pro kicker and one of the franchise’s leading scorers. But his hiccups also became too frequent. A missed extra point at the end of Week 18 against the Ravens was the last time Boswell had a notable blunder. It almost canceled the postseason appearance.

I do not expect Boswell to be perfect. But I do expect him to improve from last season. Especially with the extra cash as an incentive. The NFL's former scoring leader (2024) has a list of esteemed achievements. He's proven, but must become more consistent for Mike McCarthy's offense in 2026.

Chris Boswell's contract extension ties the All-Pro with Brandyn Aubrey as the highest-paid kicker in the NFL, according to CAA Football. The Pittsburgh Steelers need him to perform like it to increase their odds for a successful upcoming campaign.
