Few things are better than an opening-weekend victory. A 20-13 win against a handicapped Falcons roster has Mike McCarthy’s team heading in the right direction. The performance wasn't perfect, but it was enough for the Pittsburgh Steelers to start the campaign on a good note.
Still, the coaching staff must consider a few minor adjustments, especially when evaluating WR3 production. As the campaign continues, Roman Wilson and Germie Bernard are two wideouts to watch.
Their roles during the season opener differed significantly. Wilson earned 37 snaps compared to Bernard’s three. The former Michigan standout turned his opportunity into three receptions and 26 yards receiving on six targets. The contribution was appreciated, but it did little to create separation on the scoreboard.
Sure, it was nice to see Wilson making an impact. But I wonder if Pittsburgh’s recent second-round pick would’ve done more with the opportunity. Bernard’s breakout preseason performances fed fans' excitement. We’ve already watched his ability to earn yards after the catch. In three games, the rookie earned five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. He also averaged 12.8 yards per reception, displaying his playmaking tendencies.
I already know what you’re thinking. If Bernard has already shown glimpses of greatness, when will the Steelers incorporate him into the offensive scheme?
Honestly, it should only be a matter of time.

Stretching the field is essential for successful offenses. It allows quarterbacks to move the chains while keeping defenders on their toes. Slot receivers play a significant role in keeping the group ahead of schedule. They exploit coverage mismatches quickly and can easily turn a small gain into a big play.
Bernard has already demonstrated a knack for extending plays. Why not give him a chance during the regular season?
Offensive concerns have been a thorn in Pittsburgh's side for the last few seasons. In fact, the need for playmakers was so loud that the front office invested in Bernard and Michal Pittman Jr. this offseason. Both receivers add value to Pittsburgh’s receiving core. The real question is when Pittsburgh's receiving core will maximize production.
Bernard is a dual-threat player. In 2025, Alabama used the wideout in multiple ways. He finished the season with 18 carries, 101 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns. He can be used as a versatile weapon. All Bernard needs is a chance.
A win against Atlanta will help the Pittsburgh Steelers stockpile momentum. Still, they cannot ignore the missed opportunities from Sunday’s performance. It was nice to see Roman Wilson involved, but was his time on the field beneficial? As the season continues, McCarthy and his staff must watch Bernard and Wilson to see which wideout will have the biggest impact on the Steelers offense.
