We knew from the moment that Mike McCarthy had his opening press conference that he would be calling the offensive plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. McCarthy is well-known for his ability as an offensive-minded HC with play-calling duties, which has led to some of the most successful offenses in the NFL over the past two decades.

But where does that leave Brian Angelichio?

Shortly after earning the head coach job, McCarthy named Angelichio as his offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh. Between the college and NFL ranks, Angelichio has over 30 years of coaching experience, and he's best known as a tight ends coach and pass game coordinator in the NFL.

However, despite his new role as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, Angelichio won't be calling the plays... So what will he be doing for the Steelers?

Angelichio recently sat down for a one-on-one, exclusive interview with Missi Matthews of Steelers.com to explain what his responsibilities entail as OC of the Steelers.

"I'm just an extension of Mike [McCarthy]. You know, he can't be everywhere so, you know, the meetings with the players, we'll split those up, and I'll try to obviously take a lot of the load off of him and be able to run the staff meetings with the staff when we're going through practice, reveiwing tape...

[McCarthy] does a great job of letting the offensive staff go and do our thing. Certainly, you know, he's the checks and balances, right? So he's got a stroke if it's good and if he wants to change something, certainly we're going to do that."

Brian Angelichio says he's an extension of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy

Steelers fans have been wondering what Angelichio's job responsibilities would entail since he was hired. Though it's not unusual for opposing NFL teams to hire a head coach who also calls the offensive plays, this is a first for the Steelers.

Though Angelichio doesn't have play-calling duties in his first OC gig, he'll work as an extension of McCarthy. Angelichio noted that the team's head coach can't be everywhere at once. That's where he comes in.

Angelichio will run meetings and look to take the load off his head coach. He also has decades of experience working with tight ends, so he could finally help get the most out of players like Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington.

With McCarthy acting as both the head coach and offensive play-caller, it's hard to make a case for Brian Angelichio being one of the most important coaches on the Pittsburgh Steelers. But the new OC will humble himself and work behind the scenes to make sure this McCarthy-led offense is a well-oiled machine heading into the 2026 season.
