The Pittsburgh Steelers' active offseason continued on Monday afternoon, as the team fresh of trading for DK Metcalf and signing Aaron Rodgers kept wheeling and dealing. Pittsburgh acquired Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a package headlined by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The Steelers may plan on utilizing one of the league's best tight end duos in the league by leaning heavily on Smith and established starter Pat Freiermuth, but the lack of high-end wide receiver talent is still a problem that this offense needs to work its way around. Quite simply, another wide receiver is needed after trading George Pickens.
The Steelers have had some past interest in free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis, who remains unsigned just one year after signing a massive multi-year contract in free agency.
The Steelers may need to ramp up their pursuit of Davis, who reportedly was impressed by the visit he had at the facility. There's no such thing as having too many wide receivers in the modern league, and the Steelers need to be made well aware of that reality.
The Pittsburgh Steelers must sign Gabe Davis after Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith trade
Davis' time with the Buffalo Bills established him as a solid deep threat who had a propensity for making plays in big postseason games. However, concerns about his limited route tree and his serious drop problem have contributed to his remaining unemployed in the last few weeks.
Davis is fresh off a terrible season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in which he caught just 20 passes and found the end zone just twice. While circumstances involving Trevor Lawrence's injury certainly led to that decline in production, Davis also flexed a concerning inability to produce away from Josh Allen.
Davis would join a receiver room that has very few sure things outside of DK Metcalf. Roman Wilson is coming off a rookie year in which he was injured the entire time, and Calvin Austin III has a very limited physical profile. Neither of them bring the verticality that Metcalf and Davis as a pair could help form.
Davis is likely not going to cost a ton of money, and he might be the best free agent on the market relative to the price he is going to command. The Steelers know they need to go all-out to help get Rodgers a championship, and Davis would represent another aggressive move.
