The Pittsburgh Steelers got off to a strong start in their pivotal Week 14 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. With both teams knotted at 6-6, Mike Tomlin needed all hands on deck to keep the team's playoff hopes strong. Unfortunately, one of Pittsburgh's best young players was forced to leave the game early.
After a 12-yard catch-and-run over the middle of the field, Darnell Washington left his feet in an effort to pick up more yards after the catch. However, the big tight end was upended and hit the ground awkwardly. Washington was slow to get up after assistance.
Eventually, Washington made his way to the medical tent, where he was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the Steelers' Week 14 contest with a concussion.
The Pittsburgh Steelers must alter their game plan without TE Darnell Washington
Washington has been a force all season, both as a blocker and as a receiver. Despite admitting that he weighs in at 311 pounds, the 6-foot-7 tight end made several outstanding plays after the catch this season, and he's a nightmare for defenders to bring down.
But without Washington, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will be forced to switch gears.
Much of Smith's game plan revolves around Washington's ability as an in-line blocker who can be used as a receiving threat. With the Steelers' big X-Factor out, Smith could be forced to play more 11-personnel, something they do less than any team in the NFL.

Washington's absence could give a runway for Pat Freiermuth to make his presence on the field. Freiermuth's role has decreased over the 2025 season after Washington's emergence.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will play their next game on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins in Week 15. The long week could give Washington a shot at playing in another big AFC game. We'll check his availability throughout the upcoming week of practice.
