Pat Freiermuth might have said the quiet part out loud about Mike Tomlin

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth was understandably fired up after beating a heated division rival to secure the NFL's final 2025 playoff spot. Emotions were running high, which ostensibly triggered a Freudian slip.

Freiermuth couldn't contain himself during his final locker room interview of the regular season for the playoff-bound Steelers. He reflected on the team's journey over the past five years and what claiming their first AFC North championship since 2020 means. The relief, specifically regarding Pittsburgh's longtime head coach, Mike Tomlin, was palpable.

Tomlin's job status has been in question for what feels like forever, which he's even acknowledged head-on recently. It's primarily outside noise, though Freiermuth's postgame comments suggest the hot seat chatter has legs.

By the sound of it, Tomlin's future may have been riding on the results of Week 18. With that in mind, Freiermuth and Co. were admittedly extra motivated to take down the Ravens:

"Being able to get this for [Tomlin] ... it's just awesome," Freiermuth told reporters (h/t Mike DeFabo of The Athletic).

When asked to elaborate on his statement, Freiermuth replied: "You guys know what I meant by that." There was an ensuing whimsical smirk and eye roll to amplify the witty remark, too. Moreover, he didn't say it outright, but the 27-year-old recognized the magnitude of the moment against the Ravens for Tomlin.

Taking nothing for granted in real time, Freiermuth went to bat for Tomlin following the Steelers' thrilling 26-24 victory over the Ravens. The former expressed his respect and admiration for the latter, all but sending a clear message to Pittsburgh's front office.

"[Tomlin] is the best coach I've ever played for, and I think a lot of people in this locker room feel the same way," Freiermuth declared. "He's one of one. We wouldn't be here without him; he instills belief, he instills confidence in us, and I'm just super grateful to be here with him."

Steeler Nation might be getting tired of Tomlin, but internally, the players still hold him in high regard. He's made a lasting impact on those he leads, with Freiermuth's strong endorsement serving as a prime example. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh's postseason berth temporarily puts this discussion on hold.
