The New Orleans Saints might have a losing record, but Tyler Shough is giving opposing defenses plenty to worry about. Entering Week 7, the second-year quarterback has accounted for 14 total touchdowns (12 passing, two rushing) while averaging 240.5 passing yards per game. That production cannot be overlooked by Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Even if New Orleans has struggled to turn promising performances into victories. A matchup in front of fans in Paris is the perfect stage to make a statement against the rising star.

But can the defense disrupt Shough’s rhythm? It’s certainly achievable. Just take a look at Pittsburgh’s recent performances against opposing quarterbacks.

In the last three games, the Steelers have allowed only two passing touchdowns while forcing three interceptions. Deshaun Watson’s performance in Week 4 was the worst outing for Graham’s group. Cleveland’s seasoned veteran completed 72.7% of his passes and almost eclipsed 300 yards passing (299). His efforts carried the Browns to victory and forced Pittsburgh to learn from mistakes.

Pittsburgh went back to the drawing board and hasn’t looked back. Since then, opposing quarterbacks have struggled to find answers. Daniel Jones (54.5%) and Jalon Daniels (51.2%) struggled to complete passes to receivers. Patrick graham’s infantry has also racked up six sacks within the last two weeks.

It’s an incredible response after a questionable performance against a divisional opponent. But can the Steel Curtain continue its dominant streak against a determined QB like Shough?

It’s possible, but it will require a full team effort.

The Pittsburgh Steelers cannot let Tyler Shough breakout performance during an important Week 7 showdown

There’s something different about the former second-round pick from Louisville. His mobility, gustiness, and arm talent give New Orleans a fighting chance. A connection with wideout Chris Olave also gives defensive coordinators headaches. This season, the tandem has connected for 580 receiving yards and 43 receptions.

That’s more yards than CeeDee Lamb (577) and more receptions than Malik Nabers (41). Clearly, Pittsburgh cannot afford to overlook the connection.

Limiting explosive plays will be the goal for Graham’s defense. But that may be difficult to achieve with a thin secondary. According to Friday’s injury report, Brandin Echols (hamstring) is listed out against New Orleans. Jalen Ramsey has also been dealing with a nagging wrist injury, but is still expected to play.

Still, keeping Shough from extending plays could become an issue. According to Pro Football Focus, the New Orleans QB has scrambled eight times, earning 89 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He’s not prone to receive designed runs, but will make the most of the green grass available.

Still, Shough has already been sacked 13 times this season. That’s an inviting opportunity for a Pittsburgh pass rush that has generated six sacks in its previous two contests.

Thankfully, T.J. Watt (calf) and Alex Highsmith (groin) will play full snaps despite injuries throughout the week.

Patrick Graham cannot afford to let Shough dictate tempo. Simulated pressures could force the second-year quarterback into hurried decisions, while disciplined edge containment prevents him from escaping collapsing pockets. With Chris Olave commanding attention downfield, Pittsburgh’s secondary must remain disciplined through extended plays.
