It's no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers are hunting for another wide receiver to pair with two-time Pro Bowler D.K. Metcalf. Dianna Russini of The Athletic even confirmed as much on the eve of the NFL's 53-man roster deadline. They've been connected to multiple players to varying degrees, with the Las Vegas Raiders' Jakobi Meyers being the latest, only to come out empty-handed thus far.

Las Vegas quickly dismissed Meyers' trade request despite being unable to find common ground on a contract extension. On the bright side, the guy Aaron Rodgers wants could still become available. During a recent phone interview with Bill Huber of On SI, the Steelers quarterback specifically asked about Green Bay Packers fourth-year wideout Romeo Doubs. Could we see a Titletown reunion in Pittsburgh?
Aaron Rodgers makes public push for Steelers to acquire ex-Packers teammate Romeo Doubs
"Rodgers called on Monday, one day before roster cuts; interestingly, he asked about the status of receiver Romeo Doubs," Huber wrote. "Exactly two months after Tuesday’s roster cuts, the Packers will visit the Steelers on Oct. 26."
The timing of Rodgers' inquiry is uncanny. He used his discussion with Huber as a public pitch for the Steelers to acquire Doubs right before the league-wide trim-down. It's almost as if the four-time MVP knows the Packers may be inclined to part ways with the latter, whether via cut or trade.
It's a smart tactic by Rodgers. The Packers have a plethora of youngsters that the franchise is probably better giving playing time to and further evaluating than Doubs. They added their first first-round receiver in over decades in Matthew Golden, then selected fellow rookie Savion Williams in Round 3. Don't forget about Jayden Reed, Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks, either!
As you can see, Doubs is competing for a spot, let alone opportunities, in a crowded group of pass-catchers. Between his expiring salary, the arrivals of Golden and Williams and the Packers' wealth of depth at the position, he's ostensibly becoming an afterthought. The situation and overlap with Rodgers for the 2022 campaign in Green Bay make him an ideal target for Pittsburgh, though no deal is imminent.
Packers HC Matt LaFleur shooting down Romeo Doubs trade buzz throws wrench in Aaron Rodgers' plan
Doubs has been floated around as a potential cut/trade candidate this offseason. However, for whatever it's worth, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur shot down the idea of the 25-year-old donning a different uniform quite emphatically. Assuming it's not just coachspeak, this complicates matters for Rodgers and the Steelers.
"I'd be very shocked if he ever was going anywhere," LaFleur said (h/t Up & Adams). "No, that will not happen. Because Rome [Doubs] is out there competing and doing everything that we need to see from him, and obviously, he's played a lot of ball for us and at a high level. He's been a great teammate, and he goes out there and you can count on him every day."
