The Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on solidifying a competitive future. Agreeing to a four-year, $100 million deal with edge rusher Nick Herbig was part of the plan.
It was a necessary decision to ensure the long-term success of the franchise. Herbig is slowly becoming a staple in Pittsburgh’s defense. And most importantly, he is happy to become a cornerstone for the franchise.
Herbig shared his thoughts concerning his future with teammate Cam Heyward on the Not Just Football podcast.
“It was an awesome moment for me,” Herbig expressed to Heyward. “I saw Mr. Rooney and gave him about five hugs.”
A four-year contract extension is nothing to sneeze at. It's a reminder of how hard Herbig has worked since joining the team. And every penny is well earned.
The agreement deserved celebration for both parties. For Pittsburgh, they secured a rising star without creating an immediate financial burden. The former fourth-round pick will take up just 1.7% of cap space in 2026. It will jump to 7.7% next season, but it is worth the price.
For Herbig, the new deal offers a chance to become a one-helmet player. Few players are granted that opportunity. And Herbig is ready to take full advantage.
“It hasn’t really set in,” Herbig said. “It still doesn’t feel real.”
That reaction says everything.
The Pittsburgh Steelers secured long-term plan with Nick Herbig's contract extension
Herbig is not treating the contract like a finish line. He understands the responsibility, and that comes with being paid top dollar.
“I am just super blessed and grateful that God put me in this position to not just be a Steeler for the next four years but to provide for my family,” Herbig said. “To me, that means more than anything.”
It is a chance Herbig does not take lightly. And his track record proves it.
In 2025, Herbig ranked second among Pittsburgh defenders in sacks (7.5). It was a significant spike in production during a stretch when the team needed its rotational edge rusher to fill in for stars like T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. When Pittsburgh inserted its motivated quarterback hunter, the defense did not skip a beat.
That solidified Herbig as a game-changer and forced Pittsburgh to lock him up for the immediate future.
And I am glad they did.
Now, Patrick Graham has a group of edge rushers capable of striking fear in quarterbacks across the league. With Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig, the Steelers are set for the next few years.
“It’s scary, the three of us,” Herbig confessed. “We can just ball out and have fun out there, and I’m excited.”
I am excited to see how Herbig develops, especially with a new contract under his belt. This is his chance to show the world why he is worthy of being a $100 million defender.
The Steelers bet big on Nick Herbig. Now, it is his turn to make that investment look like a bargain.
