The Pittsburgh Steelers are finalizing a trade that will send cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys, according to Tom Pelissero, ending a contract standoff that had swallowed the first month of his season. Dallas had already been circling Porter as a trade target while Pittsburgh listened to offers. Now Pelissero reports the deal is being finalized, and the 26-year-old is headed out before ever taking a 2026 snap for the Steelers.

That's the clean break the situation had been moving toward. Porter wanted an extension; Pittsburgh didn't get one done before its in-season negotiating cutoff, and a back injury plus conditioning work kept him out of the first three games. The Steelers ruled him out again for Thursday night's AFC North game in Cleveland before this trade report arrived.

Everything now depends on what the Steelers are getting back. CBS Sports' Josina Anderson reported on Tuesday that Pittsburgh was asking for a second-round pick in return, but Dallas wasn't giving in.

Update: Dallas is reportedly sending a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick to Pittsburgh for Porter, according to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic

Porter, 26, is a talented, starting-caliber outside corner, and Pittsburgh has spent weeks signaling it wouldn't move him cheaply. The better the draft compensation, the easier it is to see why Omar Khan chose to move on. If the return is light, the Steelers just turned a homegrown second-round success into another asset-management question.

Pittsburgh Steelers turn Joey Porter Jr. standoff into another Dallas Cowboys deal

Dallas has become a strangely reliable exit ramp for recent Steelers draft investments. George Pickens went there in 2025, then Pittsburgh moved Broderick Jones to Dallas in August. Porter now becomes the third Steeler in two years to make that trip, and the second member of Pittsburgh's 2023 draft class to be shipped to the Cowboys in barely a month.

That's a wild bit of roster churn for a franchise that usually talks about drafting and developing its own. Pickens' departure already reset the receiver room. Jones' trade admitted a first-round tackle bet hadn't worked. Porter is different because he actually became a good NFL corner. Pittsburgh isn't dumping a failed player here. It's choosing draft compensation over repairing a relationship with one of its best young defenders.

The immediate issue falls squarely on Pittsburgh's defense. Porter hadn't played this year anyway, but his exit removes the possibility of getting a 6'2" press corner back into the lineup. Jamel Dean and Asante Samuel Jr. now have even more on their plates, especially with Jalen Ramsey and Brandin Echols questionable heading into Thursday night. Cleveland's passing game doesn't scare anybody, but an AFC North road game isn't where you want to test a thinner secondary.
