The 2026 NFL Draft is a huge event for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yes, they are serving as the host city, but the future of the franchise carries far more weight. Omar Khan is working diligently to ensure April 23 is a success. That preparation has included pre-draft visits with prospects like Taylen Green and Germie Bernard.
According to Alan Saunders, Pittsburgh met with two Day 2 prospects at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Monday: quarterback Taylen Green and receiver Germie Bernard. They also met with the expected top-15 pick Spencer Fano. It is encouraging news for a franchise with clear offensive concerns heading into what feels like a statement season.
Pittsburgh Steelers latest draft visits prove they are looking to infuse the offense with more talent
With lingering questions at QB, taking a closer look at Green is refreshing. He is an athletic, proven, and determined quarterback with tremendous upside in the right system. Green blends the prototypical size of an NFL quarterback at 6’6” with the speed and mobility of a running back.
By the end of his collegiate career, the former Freshman All-American accounted for 35 rushing touchdowns, showcasing his ability to take over games with his legs.
His throwing mechanics need refinement, but that is expected with incoming prospects. Even so, Green’s 9,662 passing yards and 59 touchdowns are difficult to overlook, especially if he is available at the right value. The current situation surrounding Will Howard’s development and Aaron Rodgers’ uncertainty creates a small but meaningful window for a young quarterback to earn a role.
I do not expect Pittsburgh to rush its next leader under center. However, if the talent is undeniable, Mike McCarthy will find ways to incorporate that skill set. Green may not be the most polished prospect in the draft, but with time and proper coaching, he has the tools to become a valuable asset in Pittsburgh’s offense.
The same optimism can be applied to Germie Bernard, who led Alabama Crimson Tide receivers with 862 yards last season. Despite his production, the lack of widespread recognition as a top-tier prospect is surprising. Fortunately, Pittsburgh did its due diligence by meeting with the versatile wideout.
And I am glad they did.
Bernard’s precise route running and physicality with the football make him an appealing target for Khan’s front office. He consistently creates separation against tight coverage and offers positional versatility across the formation. With receivers like Makai Lemon, Jordyn Tyson, and Denzel Boston expected to come off the board early, Bernard presents strong value for a team unwilling to sacrifice draft capital to move up.
Instead, Pittsburgh can use its first-round selection to address the offensive line or reinforce the secondary. Both areas remain priorities, but so does adding a dynamic presence at wide receiver. The addition of Michael Pittman Jr. gives DK Metcalf a complementary weapon on the outside. Bernard has the potential to secure the slot role, stretching defenses across the middle and opening opportunities throughout the offense.
It is a calculated vision, but one that could realistically come together, especially if the pre-draft visit left a strong impression.
Pittsburgh’s preparation for the NFL Draft began months ago, and the attention to detail is evident. Khan is making intentional decisions that prioritize long-term success while still addressing immediate needs.
April 23 is more than just a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to reshape the direction of the franchise.
