Adding a free agent at this stage is unlikely to provide an impact player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That said, stranger things have happened, and several notable names remain available. There is also a new wave of potential options entering the market, as players who recently completed their seasons in the United Football League become eligible free agents.
These players are seeking new opportunities in the NFL, and they could have an advantage over other competitors.
They are already in football shape and ready to compete for roster spots. The Steelers have signed standouts from the UFL and other spring leagues in the past to compete during training camp. With a few areas on the roster in need of stronger competition, Pittsburgh could look to add talent from the UFL.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could target free agents after the UFL completed its season
Lawrence Keys III, WR/RET, Houston Gamblers
The more a player can contribute, the better their chances of sticking around with Mike McCarthy making the decisions.
Lawrence Keys III was one of the top receivers and returners in the UFL this season, and if he can carry that success into Pittsburgh, he should have a legitimate chance to earn a roster spot. The Steelers need a reliable returner, and Keys could provide value on special teams while also contributing as a receiver.
Tony Fields II, LB, Columbus Aviators
Ideally, the Steelers would be able to find a stronger upgrade at the linebacker position than someone from the UFL, but options are limited. Tony Fields II is coming off a breakout season in the United Football League, where he produced eye-popping numbers. He is still only 26 years old and a West Virginia alum. Pittsburgh would be wise to bring Fields in to compete for a roster spot.
Colby Wadman, P, Birmingham Stallions
Punter is one position of need where adding a UFL product would make sense. The Steelers currently only have Cameron Johnston on the roster, and it would be wise to bring in another player to create competition. Colby Wadman has not played in the NFL since 2023, but he brings extensive experience. He could push Johnston and compete for the starting punter role in Pittsburgh.
Alize Mack, TE, Columbus Aviators
Based on roster numbers alone, the Steelers appear likely to add a tight end at some point. Behind Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington, there are few options.
Bringing in Alize Mack could be a smart move, as he showed enough promise in the UFL to earn an opportunity. Mack has the ability to contribute as a blocker while also providing value as a receiver, giving Pittsburgh a solid third option at the position.
Malik Fisher, EDGE, Houston Gamblers
The Steelers enter training camp with a deep group of edge rushers, but there is always room to add competition. Malik Fisher stood out for the Houston Gamblers in the United Football League this season and could be a logical addition. While Fisher may not have a realistic path to making the active roster out of training camp, he could still provide value as a practice squad option.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB, Birmingham Stallions
Many in Steelers Nation might remember when Dorian Thompson-Robinson started for the Browns and led the Browns to a victory over Pittsburgh a few years ago. He worked his way into a starting role with the Stallions this season and delivered mixed results. While he provided a boost, the team still fell short.
Thompson-Robinson is a player the Steelers could consider keeping on the practice squad as a developmental safety net.
Kedrick Whitehead Jr., S, Columbus Aviators
Despite making the Darnell Savage contract official, the Steelers could still benefit from added competition at the position as they head into training camp. Kedrick Whitehead Jr. quickly stands out as a potential option. He was a dependable contributor on special teams in the UFL this past season and also delivered solid play at the safety position.
