Offensive inconsistencies are a major concern heading into the campaign. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy’s solution is simple in theory but demanding in execution: reestablish physicality at the line of scrimmage. His fingerprints were all over the 2026 NFL Draft throughout the weekend. Omar Khan’s front office invested in prospects built to carry out the franchise’s identity.
And Indiana tight end Riley Nowakowski fits that mold perfectly.
If Indiana’s offense needed someone moved, Nowakowski was the reinforcement. The Third Team All-Big Ten Swiss Army knife spent last season opening running lanes for Fernando Mendoza’s offense. He started every game for the national champions, contributing in different ways each week. His versatility makes him a unique athlete with an intriguing skill set.
In 2025, Nowakowski recorded 387 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. His 12.1 yards per reception helped stretch the field in pivotal moments, an area Pittsburgh struggled with last season. Fortunately, their newest weapon plays with reliable focus at the catch point and shows no hesitation with defenders closing in.
The dual-threat bruiser can serve as a receiver, but he must continue refining his route running to consistently create separation.
Still, I believe he will be a tremendous asset for a unit working to reestablish physicality. And I wouldn't be surprised to see him take the field soon.
The Pittsburgh Steelers made the right decision by drafting Riley Nowakowski
Omar Khan’s offseason moves all circle the same theme.
This is not a rebrand; it is an intentional shift in philosophy. Investments in Rico Dowdle and Brock Hoffman signal a commitment to building a more fluid rushing attack. It was an eyesore for fans, and the lack of consistency on the ground ultimately suffocated any chance at playoff success.
The addition of Nowakowski is a deliberate move to incorporate a true lead blocker into the scheme. In the past, tight ends like Connor Heyward filled that role. They brought athleticism but lacked the consistency to generate long-term success in the run game.
Now, McCarthy has a bona fide lead blocker who allows others to settle into their natural roles. It frees up Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington to focus on what they do best.
That leaves the dirty work to the new garbage man on the roster.
I am excited to see Pittsburgh’s offense welcome a versatile bruiser like Nowakowski. He should help expand success between the tackles while opening up McCarthy’s system to more possibilities. If this plan comes together, the Steelers will have an innovative offense.
