Injuries are a part of business in the NFL. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Steelers have more injuries than expected. Michael Pittman Jr. (Foot) and Roman Wilson (finger) are nursing ailments that require time away from the gridiron. Absent key players usually take an immediate toll on production.

But Brian Angelichio believes Pittsburgh’s tight ends are enough to soften the impact of a wide receiver shortage.

“I think that what’s nice about having flexibility with the tight ends,” Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator told reporters. He’s absolutely right. This season, McCarthy and Angelichio haven’t shied away from utilizing safety blankets. In return, it’s created stability for an offense desperate for consistency.

Stout performances and more opportunities have helped Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth receive deserved credit. Truthfully, their impact is hard to ignore. This season, Pittsburgh’s tight ends account for 302 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Currently, Freiermuth leads the group in receptions (19), touchdowns (4), and yards (169). It’s a noteworthy start to the campaign. But should fans expect to see similar production in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

Absolutely! In fact, we could see more production from the tight ends than in previous weeks against the Buccaneers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers must utilize Darnell Washington & Pat Freiermuth vs. Buccaneers

Without Pittman Jr., Pittsburgh must rely on all skill players available to move the chains. Germie Bernard can make an impactful contribution. But if the rookie struggles to establish himself, Darnell Washington will be highly targeted.

And why wouldn’t they be? “[With] the versatility of Darnell and Pat, you know, you saw it the other night,” Angelicho reminded reporters. “We can quickly flip and get it out of 12 personnel.”

That’s exactly what the doctor ordered last weekend. And Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator believes the offense can function with fewer receivers incorporated into the formation. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers added Pat Freiermuth to the injury report. He is listed as questionable for Sunday afternoon.

Hopefully the rising X-factor can make an impact.

Washington and Freiermuth earned significant yards after the catch last weekend. Their extra effort kept Pittsburgh ahead of the chains. It also provided Aaron Rodgers with reliable targets.

Without Pittman Jr. or Wilson, McCarthy and his staff must find ways to keep the offense ahead of schedule. Both receivers have stretched the field in previous outings. Luckily, they have one of the most dynamic tight end combinations in the league. Sure, the Steelers will be without a few playmakers against Tampa Bay this weekend. But I am certain the duo will make the most of a prime opportunity.
