While the Pittsburgh Steelers await official word from free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the team still has other needs to address. The roster added prospects at the NFL Draft to help fill several gaps across the depth chart, but some areas were noticeably overlooked.

One of the most significant needs left unaddressed was inside linebacker, a position that could remain in play moving forward.

If the Steelers choose to pursue help in free agency, they could explore a familiar option who remains available. Elandon Roberts makes considerable sense as a potential addition in Pittsburgh. He fits the tough, physical run-stopping profile valued by defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, and he also has prior experience with the organization.

This is a logical move for the team to consider.

Many expected the team to select a linebacker in the draft, with some believing it could happen in the early rounds. That move never materialized, leaving the position vulnerable after showing signs of weakness last season. With no clear upgrades added to the inside linebacker depth chart through the draft or free agency, the team could turn to a familiar option as a last-minute solution.

Pittsburgh Steelers should target free agent Elandon Roberts following the draft

Signing the free agent linebacker at some point between now and the start of training camp makes plenty of sense. Roberts played under Patrick Graham last season in Las Vegas, giving him valuable familiarity with the defensive system and allowing for a smooth transition back to Pittsburgh. While he would still face an uphill battle to climb the depth chart, the challenge is not super daunting.

Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson are expected to remain the Steelers’ top inside linebackers, just as they were last season. That is not ideal, as both players showed too much inconsistency to firmly establish themselves as the clear leader at the position. This led many to believe the team would address the need with a high draft pick, but that move never materialized.

Roberts may not generate much excitement, but he is a reliable player who understands his role and consistently delivers within his strengths.

Physicality is a hallmark of Roberts’ game. He is among the league’s better run defenders and can also contribute as a pass rusher when needed. During his previous stint with the Steelers, he was highly effective and emerged as the team’s top linebacker for nearly two seasons.

With lingering uncertainty surrounding Queen and Wilson, Pittsburgh would be wise to extend an olive branch and explore the possibility of bringing Roberts back.

Behind Queen and Wilson, the Steelers have Malik Harrison, Cole Holcomb, and Carson Bruener on the depth chart. None of them would be reliable options if Queen or Wilson were to miss time due to injury. Roberts brings valuable starting experience and adds a physical presence to the defense. His ability to play multiple roles within the linebacker group would allow him to fit in seamlessly.
