There is still plenty of time for players involved in roster battles with the Pittsburgh Steelers to make their case. Training camp is still over a month away, but several positions are already shaping up to feature fierce competition across the depth chart.
One of the most intriguing battles is along the defensive line, where promising young talent will compete head-to-head against experienced veterans for key roster spots and playing time.
Hopefully, the younger players with upside will prove they are ready to take on larger roles. If they fail to win their roster battles against several notable veterans, some could find themselves on the outside looking in when the Steelers finalize their 53-man roster later this summer. After minicamp and OTAs, all attention will shift to training camp as these position battles begin to intensify.
When it comes down to it, there are likely only a couple of roster spots available along the defensive line. The Steelers typically keep around seven defensive linemen on their 53-man roster, and five players already appear locked in to make the team, including Cam Heyward, Derrick Harmon, Keeanu Benton, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Yahya Black. That likely leaves just two openings up for grabs.

Those final two roster spots will likely be decided through an open competition during training camp. Dean Lowry, Gabriel Rubio, Kevin Jobity Jr., Logan Lee, and Esezi Otomewo are among the top candidates fighting for those remaining openings. It is a solid group of defensive linemen that should create a competitive battle once final roster decisions are made.
When it comes to the younger players you would like to see emerge as future impact contributors, both Gabriel Rubio and Kevin Jobity Jr. stand out.
Rubio was Pittsburgh’s sixth-round selection in the NFL Draft, while Jobity entered the league as an undrafted free agent. Neither player should carry overwhelming expectations to make the Steelers’ 53-man roster based on their draft status, but it would be encouraging for the organization if one of those young defensive linemen emerged from the group and earned a meaningful role.
The name that stands out the most in this roster battle is Dean Lowry. He has been with the Steelers since 2024 and has played a consistent role on the defensive side of the ball during that time. Injuries have raised some concerns about his reliability, but he remains a proven veteran with strong connections to both Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers.
Lowry is viewed as a strong candidate to remain on the roster, although he is far from a guarantee to make the team at this stage of the offseason.
Both Logan Lee and Esezi Otomewo have spent time in Pittsburgh on and off while serving in depth roles along the defensive line. Lee is a former draft pick who has yet to develop as quickly as the Steelers likely hoped, making this a crucial training camp for him. Otomewo flashed some intriguing potential last season, but with a new coaching staff in place, he will need to prove himself once again.
