The Pittsburgh Steelers had what many called a “meat and potatoes” 2025 NFL Draft—physical, no-nonsense, and laser-focused on the trenches. A Shedeur Sanders smokescreen was a clever ploy that gave the front office the space to prioritize the line of scrimmage with Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black. They also bolstered the offense with Kaleb Johnson and Will Howard.

But the draft weekend didn’t end with the final pick.

In classic Omar Khan fashion, the Steelers returned to work, digging through the undrafted market to find more value. One of the most intriguing signings? Kicker Ben Sauls from Pittsburgh.

Let me tell you, this one might age like gold.

Pittsburgh Steelers might have a perfect Chris Boswell understudy in Ben Sauls

Sauls didn’t hear his name called during the seven rounds, but that shouldn’t cloud how good this kid is. The numbers speak for themselves.

Over the last two years of his collegiate career, Sauls didn’t miss a field goal attempt from inside 40 yards. Pittsburgh relies on dependability.

What makes Sauls even more exciting is his toughness. He is not your average kicker—he’s physical, has no problem getting in on a tackle if the situation calls for it, and seems to carry that gritty mentality the Steelers have always embraced.

It alone makes him a cultural fit in Pittsburgh.

Of course, no conversation about Steelers kickers is complete without mentioning Chris Boswell.

Boswell was the offense during stretches of the 2024 season. His leg carried Pittsburgh through tight games when little else was working. Sauls now enters camp with a chance to learn from one of the league’s best—and possibly take over when the time comes.

Do I expect Sauls to win the job in Year 1? No, not yet. However, is he capable of doing what Boswell has done? I think the potential. A kicker who checks all the mental and physical boxes as an undrafted free agent is rare. Ben Sauls might be that guy.

He has a vital role to fill—and the Steelers might’ve just found their next scoring leader.
