The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the offseason with clear issues to fix. Most of them were on the offensive side of the football. Key acquisitions throughout the spring helped Mike McCarthy’s staff create a new environment for the upcoming campaign. One of the most important additions was veteran running back Rico Dowdle. And he did not hesitate to let reporters know.
“You have two guys that have been productive in this league,” Dowdle told the media.
I think productive is an understatement.
The Steelers did not bring Dowdle to Pittsburgh just to add depth. They signed the seasoned veteran because he can carry a crucial workload. Last season, Dowdle rushed for 1,076 yards on 236 carries while appearing in all 17 games. He played a major role in helping the Carolina Panthers earn a playoff berth and showed exactly why he remains one of the more underrated runners in football.
He’s a motivated runner with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons on his résumé. His vision, toughness, and ability to grind out difficult yards make him an ideal fit for a Pittsburgh offense that wants to establish a physical identity. Dowdle alone is enough reason to be excited about the Steelers’ ground game heading into the season.
But it would be malpractice to forget about Jaylen Warren.
The Pittsburgh Steelers dynamic backfield is worth the excitement
For several seasons, Warren has been the energizer of Pittsburgh’s offense. His relentless running style and ability to create explosive plays have made him a fan favorite. Last year, Warren rushed for 958 yards while adding another 333 receiving yards through the air. He effortlessly proved why he is one of the most versatile backs in the AFC.
Warren is capable of being an every-down back, but he has also benefited from sharing responsibilities with complementary pieces throughout his career. Dowdle is simply the newest addition to that formula. And on paper, he may be one of the best complements Warren has had.
That reality is something Dowdle embraces.
“It’s always good to have two guys out there who can get the job done at a high level,” Dowdle admitted.
It’s hard not to agree.
The NFL season is long. Running backs absorb punishment unlike almost any other position on the field. Having two proven runners capable of carrying the offense is a necessity. The Steelers understand that, which is why Dowdle’s confidence in both himself and Warren should excite fans.
There is no room for jealousy in this backfield. Instead, there appears to be a shared understanding that success will come from working together.
The Steelers’ newest running back tandem is already putting in the work during OTAs. If their chemistry continues to grow, Dowdle and Warren have the potential to become the next duo that haunts NFL defenses. Pittsburgh has searched for consistency on offense throughout the last several seasons. A productive rushing attack would go a long way toward solving those concerns.
Judging by Dowdle’s confidence, he believes Pittsburgh is the perfect place to make it happen.
