Normally, a roster spot in the NFL is only won by players who prove they are worth keeping around. At this point in the preseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have some names who could still become part of roster cuts after the weekend. This final preseason matchup will be their final shot at winning a job. Some other players on the team who already secured jobs shouldn't feel as confident as they do.
The truth is, winning a roster spot in this league is circumstantial in some instances.
If you are a high draft pick. or the talent pool at a certain position isn't elite, then the Steelers might have no other choice but to keep someone around. It will be interesting to see if the club locates some upgrades from outside the organization after final roster cuts, which could force specific names out of town.
Pittsburgh Steelers who have overcome roster cuts this preseason but shouldn't have
Kaden Wetjen
It's been an up-and-down summer for Kaden Wetjen after Pittsburgh used its fourth-round pick on the star returner out of Iowa. He just hasn't shown much as a special teams ace, and his fumble in the previous preseason game is troublesome. The Steelers won't cut Wetjen because they just overdrafted him in the fourth round, but if his miscues continue, his job could become expendable.
Broderick Jones
No matter how things go, it's nice to see Broderick Jones on the football field after his tough neck injury set him back. He is still working his way back to football shape, but wow, the last preseason matchup was cut-worthy for the formerfirst-rounderr. This is the time for Jones to push for a starting job.
Unfortunately for the swing offensive tackle, his game has gone from bad to worse this past week.
Roman Wilson
After another training camp of high praise from many in attendance, Roman Wilson has gone quiet in the preseason.
He did have a nice outing during the preseason campaign last year, only to follow that up with a silent regular season. Wilson is now in Year 3 of his professional career, and if he doesn't figure things out now, he never will. His revitalized connection with Aaron Rodgers better be a Godsend.
Cole Holcomb
They re-signed Cole Holcomb to a new two-year contract this past offseason, which signaled him a guaranteed spot on the Steelers. With that said, Holcomb is someone the team should strive to locate an upgrade over. It's not just Holcomb, but the inside linebacker group is nearly identical to last season, which saw them struggle. You would prefer to see Pittsburgh find an upgrade elsewhere.
Will Howard
Following the second preseason flub by Will Howard and company, any sort of hype train following the young quarterback seemed to derail.
This might be his final shot to make sure he isn't part of roster cuts if they decide not to hang on to four at his position. All signs continue to point to Howard and three other quarterbacks making the team, but Howard shouldn't feel this confident in his job security.
