One thing you can never say about the NFL Draft process is that it’s ever set in stone. Between now and when the draft begins in April, prospects will see their draft stock rise and fall like a wild roller coaster. The Pittsburgh Steelers have shown a clear interest in the top quarterbacks of this class, as evidenced by their scouting department's frequent attendance at games.

Several names make sense as potential candidates to become the next signal-caller for the Steelers. Although this year’s quarterback class isn't regarded as highly as it was before the college season began, there are still some solid prospects. Players like Dante Moore, Fernando Mendoza, LaNorris Sellers, and now Ty Simpson are all in the mix.

After some early-season whispers about his role at Alabama, Simpson has significantly boosted his draft stock.

He’s putting up impressive numbers against elite SEC competition, showing that no situation is too big for him. This is a major trait for a potential franchise quarterback. The Steelers have scouted him closely, and he could very well be one of their top targets.

Heading into the season, many NFL scouts were unsure what to expect from Simpson. He waited patiently to become the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. It took four years, but 2025 was finally his chance to take the reins, and he has taken full control. Talent evaluators are thrilled with what they have seen. Pittsburgh has already scouted him, and that interest is expected to continue.

Simpson plays the game with intensity, but it is his mental awareness at the position that has impressed most observers. He has thrown only one interception this season through seven games, including matchups against four teams ranked in the top 16 of college football. His performances in those games have been among the best of the season.

He has consistently shown the ability to rise to the occasion when the spotlight is on him.

One of the main criticisms of Simpson is his limited rushing ability. He has not produced many rushing yards, but he is smart in how he moves within the pocket. The young quarterback is not just a statue in the backfield. While he will not take off like Lamar Jackson, he can use his feet to navigate the pocket and routinely find open targets down the field.

Alabama has been led to victory by its quarterback against teams like Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Tennessee. In each of those games, Simpson delivered solid numbers against defenses filled with future NFL talent. The Steelers would likely love to land him as their future quarterback. If he stays on his current path, he could make a strong case to be the top pick in the 2026 draft.
