4 players no longer on Steelers draft radar with the 17th overall pick
By Tommy Jaggi
2. Deonte Banks, CB, Maryland
Here is a player that much of the fanbase was ready to get behind as a possible selection with the 17th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Though nobody views Deonte Banks as the top cornerback in the class, he has the traits that you bet on in a first-round CB.
At 6'0'' and 197 pounds, Banks raised eyebrows at the NFL Combine with 4.35 speed, a 42'' vertical, and an 11'4'' broad jump. Though his tape is a bit more up and down than some of the other cornerback prospects this year, Banks is coming off his best season and has a pretty high ceiling based on his athletic traits.
Tomlin and Khan have an excuse not to be at Maryland's Pro Day as the NFL owners' meeting was wrapping up, but it's hard to justify sending just an area scout to see Banks when at least seven personnel members were on hand at Pitt's Pro Day at the same time.
Yes, Pitt is right in their backyard, but Andy Weidl was available. If the Steelers really had a strong interest in considering Deonte Banks with a first-round pick, they would have had more representatives on hand. Like Wright, Banks has not received a pre-draft in-house visit from Pittsburgh.
