4 Steelers players who could get cut after the 2023 NFL Draft
By Tommy Jaggi
1. Steelers could cut CB Ahkello Witherspoon
One player whose name has cooled off since before free agency started is Ahkello Witherspoon. The Steelers cornerback was initially thought by some to be a cut candidate during the 2023 offseason, as Pittsburgh could save $4 million with his release, per Over the Cap.
While Witherspoon is currently projected to start, this isn't out of the realm of possibility. Though Witherspoon is long with solid athletic traits, he could not seem to stay healthy in 2022, and when he did play, the results were less than ideal as he gave up several big touchdown receptions early in the season before landing on IR.
Now the Steelers could be looking at taking a cornerback as early as the 17th pick in the draft. Grabbing a plug-and-play starter to the tune of Joey Porter Jr. would essentially make Witherspoon expendable. The money they would save would help Pittsburgh sign roughly half of their 2023 draft class.
It's also worth noting that fellow CB Levi Wallace has the same cap number and the Steelers could save $4 million by getting out of his deal as well. Pittsburgh won't get rid of both cornerbacks, but one of these two could be cut if the Steelers take a cornerback early, and Witherspoon hasn't been able to stay on the field.
