With the regular season just around the corner, the Steelers preseason finale delivered some much-needed positive moments. As the team wrapped up with a 24-17 loss to the Lions, there were some promising signs, particularly from the first-team offense, which finally found the end zone with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields under center.
This performance was a marked improvement from their struggles in the first two preseason games, offering some optimism as the team prepares for the games that count. As we close out the 2024 preseason, here are the key winners and losers from the third game against the Lions.
Steelers Winners:
First Team offense
After a rough start in the first two weeks, the offense finally found its stride, effectively moving the ball and reaching the end zone twice. Although it was against Detroit's second-string defense, establishing a rhythm and achieving some offensive success was crucial for building confidence as the team heads into Week 1 against Atlanta.
OLB Nick Herbig
Nick Herbig was a force to be reckoned with again, recording two sacks against the Lions. He's been exceptional throughout the preseason, making it tough to ignore him for a significant role as the third outside linebacker. The Steelers are thrilled with their outside linebacker depth, especially with the standout trio of Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig.
DL Keeanu Benton
Another standout from the preseason is Keeanu Benton, a second-year player who has been nothing short of a force on the field. If he can stay healthy, he’s poised for a breakout year. Once again, he showcased his ability to be a constant disruptor, creating relentless pressure. With Benton anchoring the interior alongside Cameron Heyward, this Steelers front seven has the potential to be the best in the league.
OT Broderick Jones
Broderick Jones has faced intense scrutiny this preseason, particularly after a bad performance against the Bills last week. It was encouraging to see him rebound and show no signs of struggle against the Lions. As we approach Week 1, it will be interesting to see if Troy Fautanu returns and secures a spot in the starting lineup. If Fautanu does start, we may also see Jones shift to left tackle.
Steelers Losers:
OT Devery Hamilton
Devery Hamilton, a third-string tackle, struggled significantly with pass protection, allowing a sack during the game. Although his chances of making the team are slim, this performance did not help his case for a spot on the practice squad.
Special Teams coverage units
The Steelers need to find a reliable gunner to bolster their coverage unit. Cameron Johnston's impressive punting performance is being undermined by subpar coverage. Expect this issue to be addressed once final roster cuts are made around the league on Tuesday.
OT Joey Fisher
The final offensive drive to tie the game was derailed by consecutive penalties on Joey Fisher, eliminating any chance of converting a fourth down. As a result, the team was forced to punt, and the Steelers never saw the ball again.
