I was skeptical of the Steelers heading into this game. The Chargers had been one of the more dynamic offenses on the ground this year, and their defense was nothing to underestimate. Even with an injured Justin Herbert, it seemed like a tough game to win this week.

It was far from perfect, but this may have been the Steelers best game of the season so far. They adjusted to early issues and found some more consistent footing on offense. It was a performance to build off of, at the very least. Here are the 4 winners and 1 loser from the Steelers win over the Chargers.

Steelers winners:

Justin Fields

Far and away this was the best performance from Justin Fields for the Steelers. The offense still was more reserved, but they opened the playbook up some and to great success. He was effective as a passer and also rushed for the first touchdown, showcasing his dynamic ability. While an interception sours his overall stats, it wasn’t his fault as the pass was bounced into the air. He needs to be the starter moving forward.

Calvin Austin

No one is going to mistake Calvin Austin with an elite receiver, but considering the need for a capable second option, Austin looked the part this week. He made quite a few core catches, although his day was highlighted by a long touchdown catch and run. He certainly made his case as the second option on the passing game with Van Jefferson hurt.

Nick Herbig

Nick Herbig had been relatively quiet through two weeks of play, but he reminded everyone of why there was so much hype attached to his name this week. He was quick off the edge and forced a strip sack during the second half. He was lightning in a bottle and helped keep the Chargers offense at bay.

Steelers run defense

I’m lumping the entire front seven as a group here for their sound run defense. It was no secret how the Chargers had been winning this year, as JK Dobbins had been on fire early this year. While dedicating to stopping the run led to some early struggles against the pass, it ultimately resulted in a strong day on defense. Dobbins had 44 rushing yards and didn’t gash this defense, a huge reason why this team won.

Steelers loser:

Spencer Anderson

Just like Broderick Jones a week ago, it is hard to be confident in a player who ended up rotating drives in this game. Spencer Anderson hasn’t been horrible, but he lacks the spark this team wants at guard. He may be better suited as a backup at this point, as his starting play is lacking elite moments.

You could find some fault in some other names on this list, but there wasn’t anything egregious. It was a clean performance from start to finish with good adjustments along the way. If the Steelers can consistently play like this, they could be a team to watch for the remainder of the season.
