5 free agents the Steelers should aggressively pursue in March
By Tommy Jaggi
Mekhi Becton, OT
One interesting player set to hit the free agent market this year is former first round offensive tackle, Mekhi Becton. As a rookie, Becton looked phenomenal -- starting 13 of 14 games and earning a 74.4 overall grade from PFF. However, injuries forced him out of action after just one game in 2021, and he missed the entire 2022 season.
Becton finally returned to the field and started 16 games in 2023, but he didn't look nearly as good as he did prior to his injuries. To be fair, the entire Jets offense was abysmal this season and the whole offensive line collectively graded out as one of the worst units in the league.
If Becton hits the market, however, this would be a very intriguing signing. At 6'7'' and 363 pounds, Becton played 883 snaps at left tackle this past season. However, because of his frame and lateral movement limitations, he's a player who could probably benefit from a shift to right tackle. This would allow Broderick Jones to kick back over to his more natural position on the left side.
No matter how you slice it, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to find an offensive tackle during the 2024 offseason. Mekhi Becton comes with significant injury risk, but he has a rare frame for the position and was heading toward a Pro Bowl career before injuries mounted. If he can stay healthy, the potential payout for the Steelers could be phenomenal.
