The Black and Gold could target another Cornerback early in the Draft

With the emergence of Joey Porter Jr., many would have thought cornerback would be a luxury pick early in the 2024 NFL Draft. That is sadly not the case as Patrick Peterson seems to be done playing on the outside as a starting cornerback in the NFL. Levi Wallace is a pending free agent and showed that he should not be a starting option for their defense.

We know that the black and gold will have some money to spend in free agency when their cap number is finally set. That should open the door for a potential signing of a starter at the opposite cornerback spot of Porter. If they do decide to forgo the free agent options available and turn their attention towards the draft, then they will focus on the position at this event.

There are a lot of talented cornerbacks coming out of this draft class. The Steelers need upgrades at the outside spot and in the slot. Ideally, they can find a way to address both this offseason. They have expressed interest in a couple of cornerbacks during the pre-draft process thus far. Expect that trend to continue at the NFL Combine this week.

A couple of names to monitor this week are Quinyon Mitchell, Kalen King, and Cooper DeJean. Both Mitchell and King will be participating while DeJean will not. He is still recovering from an injury but pay attention to if the Steelers brass interview him. He would be a nice get in round one if he slips to their pick at 20. Mitchell can cement himself with a strong showing. King has to bounce back after a poor Senior Bowl week.
