Keeanu Benton could make a big impact as a rookie
I don't think that the media is talking about Keeanu Benton enough. In a draft class loaded with talent and excellent value picks, Benton gets a little overlooked. However, when I was down in Latrobe for Steelers training camp, the rookie defensive lineman arguably looked like the best at his position.
During OL vs DL drills, Benton has some very impressive reps. His blend of quickness, power, and agility help him thrive in one-on-one situations, and he had some easy wins against backup offensive linemen. In addition to this, Benton showed up in a big way during team sessions. The big defensive tackle knifed through the offensive line and stopped running back Anthony McFarland dead in his tracks for a tackle for a loss in 11 on 11s.
Benton wasn't listed as a starter on the first Steelers depth chart of 2023, but there is still plenty of time for that to change. He could begin his career as a nose tackle, and when compared to Montravius Adams and Breiden Fehoko, he's much more talented and versatile than the competition.
Benton isn't perfect, and he needs to work on switching up his pass rush moves in order to win more consistently in this department. However, I was impressed by what I witnessed from him at Steelers training camp. The second-round pick could be a key contributor on defense from day one.
