2. Ronnie Hickman, 6’, 209, Ohio State

Where Chamarri Conner is an exceptionally-experienced but possibly low-ceiling player, Ronnie Hickman is somewhat the opposite. Hickman is a two-year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and he took major steps forward from 2021 to 2022. He redshirted as a freshman in 2019, played sparingly in 2020, and became the starting strong safety in 2021. He was in Columbus for four years but won’t turn 22 until this October. Hickman is solid at getting his hands on the ball and forcing turnovers (six passes broken up, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles).

Unfortunately, Hickman has not tested at all during the pre-draft process. There doesn’t seem to be a concrete reason why, so it seems like he is nursing an injury. While athleticism isn’t necessarily a concern for Hickman, having a major unknown variable like this could knock him down some boards. He is very reliable in coverage but has some issues with missing tackles in the open field. Given his lack of playing experience (relative to some of the other players mentioned), this is something he could correct with more snaps and coaching, but it is an important concern.

Overall, Hickman strikes me as a very worthwhile investment of the Steelers’ fourth-round pick. He could start his career as a rotational player that takes the field against heavier personnel groups. When the Steelers deploy three safeties, he can be the box safety with lighter coverage responsibilities. As he learns from veterans like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Damontae Kazee, he could develop into a plus starter that could be an improvement on Terrell Edmunds.
