8 potential cap-casualties that should have the Steelers salivating
By Andrew Falce
Steelers could sign Tre’Davious White
The best name on the list, if the Bills move on from Tre’Davious White, the Steelers would be a logical home for him. While I am not banging the table for a major addition at cornerback, I am more than willing to take a risk on White if he were to hit the open market. When healthy, he has played like the best cornerback in the league.
The when-healthy part has been the issue, as he has only played in 21 total games over the past three seasons. He has gone from arguably the best cornerback in the league to one that is scarcely seen. The Bills don’t save a tremendous amount of cap space by cutting him (6 million or 10.2 million if a post-June cut), they are also projected to be close to 50 million in the hole. Hard choices will have to be made.
White certainly carries some risks right now, but that should lower his projected cost. The Steelers could sign him on a rebound deal where he bets on himself to get back to form. It still won’t be cheap, but he likely wouldn’t command top dollar in this market.
If he returns to form, you suddenly have an elite pair of cornerbacks on your roster. If the injuries persist, you see what you have in younger options like Cory Trice and Darius Rush. White has all of the talent in the world. Injuries have derailed him as of late, but Pittsburgh could be a great spot for him to get back on track.
The NFL.com list is an expensive one, and I highly recommend reading through it to see some of the other names on the chopping block. That said, the Steelers should have these eight potential cap casualties circled as targets this offseason.
