Best NFL free agents still available for Steelers at slot cornerback
By Tommy Jaggi
On paper, the Pittsburgh Steelers roster got dramatically better since the end of the 2022 season. Omar Khan and the front office were able to retain virtually every player of value (outside of Cameron Sutton) while filling holes in free agency and loading up on talent in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Now, following the second wave of Steelers OTAs, Pittsburgh still has one open roster spot to round out their 90-man summer roster. Coincidentally, they also have one glaring hole remaining.
Now that they have filled the depth at edge defender by adding veteran pass rusher, Markus Golden, the biggest remaining weakness is slot cornerback. Former All-Pro CB Patrick Peterson has already seen some slot snaps during OTAs, but he has never played more than a few snaps at the position, and the Steelers could use a stable presence to cover their bases ahead of the season. Here are three free-agent slot cornerbacks who are still available.
Steelers could sign CB Troy Hill
Hill isn't a full-time slot cornerback, but much like Cameron Sutton, he has the ability to play both inside and on the boundary. At 5'11'' and 180 pounds with pedestrian athletic traits, Hill overcomes his size, speed, and explosion deficiencies with an outstanding feel for the game and great anticipation.
Because the Rams had him playing a big role last year, Hill primarily played on the outside, but still logged 172 snaps from the slot and 77 snaps from the box, according to Pro Football Focus. Hill has had a very respectable NFL career and he graded out as the 54th-best cornerback in the NFL last year.
Hill's best role at this stage of his career is as a slot cornerback. The veteran will turn 32 years old just before the season and isn't a long-term answer at the position, but he would be a significant upgrade over Chandon Sullivan, who was signed as the 2023 NFL Draft was coming to a close.
