Did Steelers just cross off Jordan Addison as a possible first-round pick in 2023?
By Tommy Jaggi
It's been an incredibly busy offseason for Omar Khan in his first offseason as general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers. While balancing a jam-packed pro day schedule, Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidl have made a plethora of offseason moves for free agency, including signings, cuts, and restructures.
Since early last week, Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin have hit the pro day trail hard -- visiting teams like Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, and Iowa all in a short period of time. This puts a handful of prominent prospects on the radar as potential first-round picks for the Steelers in the 2023 NFL Draft.
However, one player who may no longer be on their first-round radar is wide receiver, Jordan Addison. With seven pro days taking place, Tomlin and Khan opted to stay in the Cyclone State for Iowa State's Pro Day as opposed to flying out to the west coast for USC's Pro Day.
I don't want to read too deeply into things here. This team obviously knows Addison extremely well. However, the Steelers have not drafted a player in the first round that they haven't met with at their Pro Day since at least 2010. Without Kevin Colbert calling the shots, perhaps the team breaks this trend, but Tomlin clearly values seeing these players up close and personal just before he decides to spend elite draft capital on them.
Steelers could still take Jordan Addison at pick 32
Historically, the fact that the Steelers didn't send their head coach or GM to see Jordan Addison at his pro day could mean that he's not on the radar for the 17th overall pick. However, that doesn't mean they aren't interested in adding him to their roster.
It's worth noting that Pittsburgh owns the 32nd overall pick in the draft -- the first selection in the second round -- thanks to the Chase Claypool trade. Obviously, Addison isn't guaranteed to fall this far, and it seems likely that he will be drafted somewhere in the back half of the first round. If he does slip, however, the Steelers could pounce.
Trends show that the HC/GM pro day rule does not apply to players selected beyond the first round. In 2017, Pittsburgh took JuJu Smith-Schuster in round two despite not having any Steelers representatives at his Pro Day.
Once again, trends are made to be broken, so I wouldn't rule out Addison at pick 17 completely. However, I have always viewed him as a second-round prospect who shouldn't be selected this early, and it's possible that the Pittsburgh Steelers feel the same way.
