First Steelers injury report for Week 2 could result in unexpected shake-up at OT
By Tommy Jaggi
The Pittsburgh Steelers released their first injury report ahead of Week 2, and a few names popped up that we didn't see coming. Mike Tomlin hinted to the media that Justin Fields will start against the Denver Broncos in Week 2, so we knew Russell Wilson would once again show up on the injury report. However, a few names added to the list could result in a shake-up for the Steelers.
Pittsburgh will have their second straight road game to open the season before returning home against the Chargers next week. This is a must-win game against the Broncos in Week 2, and Denver is dealing with a share of injuries of their own.
After the offensive line proved effective in protecting the quarterback in the Steelers' Week 1 win against the Falcons, a potential shake-up at the offensive tackle position could create an interesting predicament in Week 2.
Broderick Jones could finally play left tackle after latest Steelers injury news
In addition to Russell Wilson showing up on the injury report for the second straight week with a calf issue, wide receiver Roman Wilson (ankle) and cornerback Darius Rush (concussion) joined him as limited participants on Wednesday. Larry Ogunjobi was also added to the Steelers injury report as a limited participant with a knee issue.
However, one injury along the offensive line could create an interesting scenario in Week 2.
We knew that offensive guard Isaac Seumalo wasn't going to be practicing early in the week after suffering a pectoral injury before the start of the season. Now offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. missed practice with an ankle injury.
Moore is coming off a respectable regular-season debut against the Falcons as the team's left tackle. Thanks to his performance, he wasn't about to leave the field. That could change in Week 2.
This week, first-round offensive tackle Troy Fautanu is not listed on the team's injury report, which means he's healthy enough to suit up. But with Broderick Jones slotted at right tackle, it was unlikely both players would see the field at the same time.
It appears a window of opportunity just opened for that to happen.
If Moore can't return to log a full practice this week, Steelers fans could get what they've been begging for all along -- Jones at left tackle with Fautanu at right tackle. After all, the front office made it clear that this was the plan during the offseason.
Jones played the vast majority of his snaps at right tackle during the summer, but he's a left tackle by trade, and the Steelers have expressed interest in getting him back into his natural position. It's unfortunate that it may take an injury to Dan Moore to make this happen, but the switch could benefit the Steelers in the long run.
Keep an eye on the final injury report on Friday. If Moore can't go, the Steelers will be set to deploy both of their first-round offensive tackles together for the very first time.
