Through two games, the Pittsburgh Steelers are undefeated behind the consistent play from quarterback Justin Fields and a strong defense. Things are going just as planned, given the circumstances.
With Russell Wilson dealing with a nagging calf injury, Fields will continue to get the starting nod in his place, per head coach Mike Tomlin. However, it's starting to look more and more like Fields is going to keep the job rather than Wilson returning under center when he's healthy.
Everyone and their brother has an opinion on the Steelers' quarterback situation, but maybe taking the insight of a former NFL quarterback is worthwhile. Dan Orlovsky is a quarterback-turned-analyst, now, and he's got some very strong feelings in regards to what the Steelers should do with Fields and Wilson going forward.
In an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show this week, Orlovsky put it bluntly:
"I think Justin should be their starter and I think they can beat basically anybody with him," Orlovsky said.
Whew ... that sure is an opinion. Now, Orlovsky did get questioned by McAfee after he said that, with the host asking if he thinks the Steelers can win a Super Bowl with Fields.
More Steelers news:
Orlovsky went on to clarify that he doesn't believe the Steelers are "explosive enough" to hang with some of the better offenses in the league if they have Wilson starting. He noted that, if the offense continues to progress with Fields, that he could see them beating anybody, including making a Super Bowl run.
Justin Fields isn't lighting up the stat sheet, but he doesn't need to
Through two weeks, Fields has played remarkably in terms of keeping the ball safe. He has yet to turn it over, which was something Fields had been previously criticized for, especially when it came to securing the ball himself.
Currently, Fields ranks 13th in the league with a rating of 94.4, among starting quarterbacks. He is completing just under 70 percent of his passes while also adding 84 rushing yards.
That's about as much as you could ask for from the former Ohio State Buckeye. Things should only get better from here, with this being Fields' first year in Pittsburgh. Learning a new offense, with new teammates, isn't the easiest nor smoothest process. But so far, Fields is doing it and he's doing it well.
Supported by the no. 5 defense in yards per game allowed and no. 2 defense in scoring, Fields is doing exactly what he needs to be doing. And, as long as he continues down this path and the defense is able to stay mostly healthy, there is no reason why Pittsburgh shouldn't stick with him under center.
Orlovsky sounded a little crazy with what he said, but maybe, just maybe ... he's right.
Justin Fields: Super Bowl champion.
How does that sound?
